Hello,

hope you're all doing ok. I managed to get out into some late afternoon sunshine yesterday for a long hike and ended up here, at Butter Rock. This quiet spot lies at the far western end of the beach At Durdle Door, which you can see in my last post if you're interested.
The long walk along energy sapping fine flint shingle ensures this area stays devoid of people, so i was lucky to find myself alone here with just this chalk sea stack and the occasional Gull for company - bliss!

It was an extra special trip out for me, as it also gave me a chance to play with my new toys, a Canon 5D and a Canon 17-40L.
The combination of these two has given me a whole new world of clarity and detail. The 12.8mp sensor and L series glass are just fantastic. The reason for this upgrade of body and lens was so i could use the 17-40mm 'L' quality without forsaking the wide end of the focal range, which i would if i kept my 40D with it's cropped sensor. I will still keep the 40D for wildlife photography, as it has a much faster burst rate (6.5fps) than the 5D's 3fps. The Sigma 10-20 is still a superb lens and i would recommend it to anybody. But the 17-40L so far just has that extra something special..i'm glad i took the plunge and spent the money.
Tomorrow i will take delivery of a set of Lee Filters too, which will hopefully now allow me to produce images of a much better quality! The magenta colour cast of Cokin Filters wil at last no longer be an issue..

Anyway, hope you like this first attempt with the new kit, as always if you want to see more of the beautiful Dorset Coast please click on the link below...

Hi Paul,
Magnificent scenery. Exceptional achieved. What colors!
I would have liked and I very much to be there.
At least several hours.
Have a pleasant week,
Adrian

P.S. I added to my list of lovers of landscapes TN members. I hope that is ok. If you disagree, please write to me.

Wilcome back Paul!
Really great to see you again! This new picture looks very beautiful - it has great panoramic view, natural, but vivid colours, simple but very lovely composition and two things I really like to watch on 1 picture: the sea and the rocks.
I really hope to see another pictures from you soon :)
Greetings from Lodz,
Radomir

Hi mate and congrats again for your new toys!
Great to see you've already put them to good use and i must say i love what i'm seeing :)

You really were fortunate to find this place so alone and without any distracting human...but you know the saying "Fortune favors the bold" :)
So i see i still have a lot more to visit from your stretch of coast, huh :)
Thus Butter rock look amazing here and that superb blue sky only makes it look even better! The beautiful reflection of that blue tone in the shaded sea is also a lovely treat and it also sort-of makes the pebbles more evident, too. The combination of it all is just crackin'!
I also took a look on your website and checked the new photos there and (as i hoped) i found a vertical shot of this place, too. I must say, i really like this one here but i absolutely LOVE that one! The FG textures here, the reflection and the pointy bright rock are composed beautifully and make such a strong impact.
Anyway, the fact of the matter is they both are testament on you starting on the right foot with your new "professional" gear and i can only hope to see more!
Good luck with the new Lee filters, too, good luck with the weather and with your free time, as well ;)

Cheers and BRAVO for these, again
Horia

Hello Paul,
Like always a beautiful composition and for me an amazing clarity of the water, which you reached with you new camera. I just have a little problem with the blue color and I wonder if the water had this very blue color. The picture looks very beautiful, but for me lacks a little bit of naturalness. I hope you don't mind my remark.
Have a nice evening

Hi Paul. Firstly you vave been spending lots of money but good for you and what a wise move. I am waiting for the 7D to come out this week .
If this is a sample of what is to come you are going to be moving into a new level .
I have never see Butter Rock before your picture which looks 3D is first class. With so many shades of blue. with the refection in the water.
Very well done TFS.
Nick..

Hi Paul
Very nice landscape, composition and color,
great
Regards

Hi Paul,
When I read the note from Horia, I knew that you bought the 5D. It is a camera best suited for our greatest love. I would have gotten the same if I didn't had my expensive vacation in the USA. Its good to read that you also decided to go for the best filters. I am sure you are going to see the difference with the Lee filters as soon as you put them infront of that cracking lens. What filters did you buy?
The photo is a stunner and excellent proof of this pro camera and lens. The 10-20 can surely not get such fine result. I love the clarity and crisp details.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Paul,

What a vibrant image this is. The complementary blues and golds are stunning. I think I agree with Horia. This shot is great and the vertical one is even better!

Congratulations on all the new equipment. It couldn't be in better hands. : )

Hi Paul!

I notice that you also have got a new camera and a new lens. The game must go on...! I'm so glad to look at your pictures again! And it seems that you already handle your new camera at best. Indeed, the clarity and the lighting, but also the richness of the details are marvellous!

Kind regards

Markus
