The Giants Causeway is a region located at the tip of Northern Ireland and is renowned world wide for its beauty and unique geological qualities.

The region is made of a volcanic rock called basalt which flowed out of the earths crust some 50-60 million years ago. When it cooled and solidified the chemical elements in the basalt formed approximately some 40,000 geometric, mostly hexagonal, shapes.

Hi Stephen
Your rock formations are really interesting. A symetrical view of one of mother natures rock sculptures. Beautifully composed and shown. I like the way the basalt formation wraps around your image into the background. Lovely colours and lighting.

Everything looks fantastic Steve, nice drama in the sky up-top, interesting light..The weathered basalt rock formations add wonderful textures & symmetry that dominate this very well composed image.
Excellent work you landscape artist you ;}
Very well done!

Hi Stephen
your landscape photo is very good

I think you have posted images of this place before??? It is really interesting and this shot is very different. The way the light plays with those wonderful shapes offers endless photo ops there I would imagine. It is a very dramatic image in scale from fore to back and in light and color and in the action of sea and sky against the static rocks. Nice work

Incredible, gorgeous picture! Very moody. The water flow adds considerable viewer interest to the composition and you show the columns perfectly. Composed and post processed exceptionally well.

The geologic term for the hexagonal shapes in your picture is "columnar joining". It is a crystalline structure of basalt that forms when it cools slowly from liquid to solid deep underground over about 10,000 years.

Basalt is the rock of the ocean bottom. It is denser than the rocks that make up the continents which are less dense so float on top of it.

It is unusual that basalt is exposed like this above sea level which is probably why this area is renowned for its unique geological qualities.

Great capture of the Giants Causeway Steve.
One place I'd love to see sometime.
Cheers
Steve

Hello Stephen !
I visited the Giant's Causeway when I was a child, with school, and I loved this place - I hope I can visit it again, some day. Your picture brings back a lot of happy memories, it is excatly the kind of pictures I wih I could have taken when I was there. Everything is perfect here : composition, low POV, natural colors, sharpness throughout the whole picture... Very well done !
Valerie.
