Those stalactites were in one of the caves under the Bermuda island. Very impressive in my opinion.

From the net: Stalactites are composed of calcite (calcuim carbonate) formed from the limestone rock (also calcium carbonate) which is, itself, millions of tiny marine skeletons accumulated over millions of years which have compacted and hardened.
As water trickles slowly through fractures, the rock is dissolved and re-deposited around the edge of a drop of water clinging to the roof. A tiny ring of limestone, the diameter of the drop is formed. As more calcite is deposited, the stalactite grows.
The drop must hang for some time to form first a near-transparent, crystal white ring, then, as the ring grows, to create a delicate straw form. These are the beginning stages of a stalactite. In time, the hollow tube becomes blocked and water runs down outside the tube or migrates through the thin porous walls. Then the more familar, thicker tapering stalactite results.
Enjoy!

It nice to see the thin ones still intact. Most of ours have been broken by human intervention. The refelction in the water adds a nice effect. Thanx for sharing.

Beautiful view of a geologic time capsule. This is a wonderfully detailed view of a cave and pool. The lighting, exposure, and texture are perfect. Well done.

You're really in my territory now.I'm an old caver from way back! And this is as nice as any cavern I've been in. It's truly beautiful,in pristine condition and still 'alive' and growing as evidenced by the wet shiny flowstone.
You just beat me to it....I was going to go caving this weekend to photograph some wicked crystals that I found last time I was in the stream passage of Gardners Gut at Waitomo.
(I used to be a guide at the Waitomo Glow worm cave)
An excellent photo, just superb....but how did you take it? Cave photography is not easy. I'd love to know your method.
Your write up is spot on too.
Brilliant!

Lord Potty said it as a brother in cavers fellowship (lighning could be better, separate acetilene lamps is what makes the speleo photography perfect) ... so here are your points and thanks to remind me is time to visit a cave ...

Beautiful pic, although the thin and great number of stalactites they can be seen perfectly. Beautiful lights, reflections and composition, and better: an original and unusual theme. Congratulations. Very well done.

I presume there is some natural light reflected of the water to help light this excelent cave image as there does not seem to be the usual harsh shadows we usuallyend up with in cave/ speleo-photography,
definatley a cracking image

Congratulations Birgit to present an image thus in TN.
Most of us you do not have the opportunity to enjoy a site like this and hs captured it great beauty.
Superb perspective with suitable depth and clearness.
An additional point by the reflection of the wonderful cave.

AMAZING! Stalactites are very interresting structures! And the reflex of them on the water gave a psyco view! Great Shot!

Birgit, as Ricardo has written above, most of us will never see something like this: I myself have never seen.

Congratulations. Your picture is very beautiful. It's a privilege to check it. Sharpness and depth of field (DOF) are great.
