| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Looking out of my window a couple of evenings ago I did a double take as what I first thought was a sparrow paying a late visit to the bird table was in fact a woodmouse. This little fellow was accompanied by a pal.. I have posted a picture showing both on treklens. He/she is happily swinging on the peanut holder to great comic effect. And no, they are not new winged species! They have climbed up the garden hedge which the bird table is close to. I think this must be a regular visit for them as my going outside to take their picture had them scurrying away only for a short while and then they returned to continue with their supper. The TV noises from the house did not bother them nor did the camera flah.
nb the bird table was pushed close to the hedge to act as protective cover for the visiting garden birds. A sparrowhawk had been targeting these "sitting ducks". Although the sparrowhawk must have his dinner too we wanted him to go find it elsewhere. Not long ago a sparrowhawk discovered our barn in which swallows nested. There was total devastation. |

Hello Beverley (I've just been reading your profile. That's just what I was like when I first discovered the Trek sites, very funny).
I really like this image, and it probably explains why I keep finding my bird feeder on the floor in the mornings, although the magpies have been coming and going as well recently, much to the dismay of the tits.
Obviously the flash rules this image, but I'm not clever enough in this field to offer any other advice. You could take a look at some of Hollie's images (slrnovice2) as she was lucky enough to capture some wildlife from her garden at night, and if I remember correctly had some flash issues.
Anyway, well done on this one, not the sort of image you can plan.
Thanks for posting - I wish I had a barn :-(
Funny picture. Useful note. I thought in myself that the flash must have scared him to death. I was surprised when I read your note afterwards.
A nit: the background is so dark. Only workaround: a flash that can be orientated to the ceiling

Delightful capture of a saucy little thief. The darkness of the background is something I have had to overcome too -- I do a lot of judicious dodging to gently bring out a few details. No need to try to overcome the fact that it is a night shot, just mitigate it a little.
Best regards

I love that mouse shot. Very cute. The black background really gets it standing out as well.

This is such a cute picture. He has the greatest ears. I believe he could almost fly! I like the black background. To me it really makes this little fellow jump out of the photo.
Great Job.

Hi Bev
Just seen this on the front page as I signed on, really nice shot of the cheeky mouse pinching the birds peanuts, nice pose and details too, I had the same experiance a few months ago and also thought it was a Sparrow, my Mouse also climbed the Hedge and scurried away for about a min before returning for more.
TFS Hilary :o)
I like this shot.
I hug.
