[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Taken at Christmas, I thought I would return to Scotland again. This is a compilation of 2 photographs (1 of which was previously posted by itself), both taken at wide angle (18mm), both in RAW, kept to exactly the same settings so that the join is virtually invisible.

I have to confess to not having used a tripod, whilst I have a couple, I just don't have one I will happily carry up mountains, in the middle fo winter (along with all the other winter survival gear you need at -10C at the bottom of the glen) and have the full height from.

The area will be a familiar one to anyone who knows my photos - Loch Dochard, on route to Glen Kinglass. It's just over 2 hours from the nearest road, which is single track leading from Bridge of Orchy at the base of Rannoch Moor, and if you are like me, it is closer to 3 hours by the time you have stopped numerous times to take photographs!

Name the mountains time - in order closest first, Meall an Araich, Meall nan Eun, Stob Coir'an Albannaich (1044m), Glas Bheinn Mhor (933m), Beinn Aighenan (957m) and maybe Beinn nan Lus.

OK - pictures info. Taken in .RAW format and converted to .jpeg, joined, resized (both are full frame), and sharpened, and border added. No colour enhancements at all, no increase in saturation levels or contrast.

The photo was taken using a polarising filter, hence the darker blue effect in the middle of the picture, but please remember you are looking at an almost 180degree panorama here, and this is exactly how a polarising filter works (at certain angles to the sun). In hindsight, maybe I would have been better off without the filter, but everything was saying use it...


In previous posts of the mountains in Scotland, I have been asked as to why there are very few or no trees in my photos... As you can see most of the landscape in this area lacks trees other than forestry commision plantings and even they struggle and need lots of help.
The reason is that the area is mostly peat (formerly forest which was cleared hundreds of years ago), which has a very high acidity and water level, leaving waterlogged roots to rot in unfavourable conditions. The result is that most the land is exceptionally difficult to grow in (unless you are heather/ling etc) in the glens (valleys) and mostly bare rock further up the mountains. Any trees that do manage to try to live, then get eaten alive by red deer or drowned by the high rainfall... so not many trees survive and any 'woodland' is rather thin or thread bare...

Hi Emma,
What a lovely photo and what a great stitch. I am glad that you can also see the larger version, because it shows so much detail in your photo. The reflection and sunlight is just amazing. Who cares you didn't use a tripod. Steady hands can do the job as well. Respect for going up the mountains with freezing temps.

Lovely shot Emma! I particularly love the combination of warm ochre tones and cool blues you've captured here. If I were to suggest anything, perhaps rotate it 1°CCW? Also, looks like you used a polarizer? If you want to even out the sky you could use shadows/highlights 50%/70%, just on the sky area. You could also make the shadow areas less cool using Levels, play with the mid point dropper. Anyway, a lovely capture - I've always been a sucker for reflections :-D

That's a pretty steady shot for cold hands and no tripod! It's a very effective image. I like it a lot. I guess I can see the merit in evening out the sky tone a little, but I really like that rich blue especially in the water.

Superb work, the colors are rich, lighting is perfect and the reflections are as breath taking as the landscape itself.

That is one hell of a shot Emma, the light and that mirrored image. The large post is a huge bonus. I use to take many pan shots with my small 2mp Sony but I have to confess with the DSLR I have never been successful. On my recent trip I took a series of images in a few locations but I cant stitch them in PS. The ends are not joining well. Maybe a program dedicated to that would curve and adjust the distortion. I took them at the 24mm setting on my sigma. Anyhow, awesome capture. Very well done.
