Dipping my toe into the macro world here a bit. I'm sure Ram and Fartash will tell me where I've gone wrong, but that's what this site is all about.

I was actually out in the woods photographing Red Squirrels and wild birds, which was quite succesful, when I came across our little friend here scoffing some decaying matter.

Swapped from my 80-400mm lens to my 70mm macro lay down and got just two shots before it buzzed off.

It's taken at f5.6 so not much depth of field, but I was trying to concentrate on the probiscus and those eyes.

I'm no entomologist, so I don't have a scooby as to what it is. I'm sure someone will.

Should I stick to the bigger furry and feathered stuff?

Thanks for looking.

Gary

Hi Gary,
Splendid macro shot. I like how you have precisely focused on the head and the rest of the body is OOF but I think a smaller F-stop (f2.8/f3.5) would have yielded better results if you wanted a pin pointed focus. Anyway, very impressive sharpness and a nice colours. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

nice macro. some more DOF would have been nice but the eye is perfect and everything else is blurred to some level or other but that creates a great composition. good colors.

What a wonderfully creative shot!
I actually like the lack of dof - it creates an interesting effect...very artistic.

Hi Gary

I like the slightly sinister effect created by the blurred areas - concentrates one's attention on the eyes. The colour is also very good.

Gary, you have done pretty well with your first macro.
Your objective was to focus on the face and you have done it successfully. The eye in particular is very well captured.
DOF is bound to be shallow at that aperture value.
One thing that you did not do (which Fartash and I would have done) was to use your fill flash.
An impressive first attempt that ought to motivate you to go for more :-).
Regards.

Hi Gary,

A wonderful first attempt. I don't know a thing about the finer points of macros - I just know I like it. The eyes are marvelous. The blurred parts look very artistic and the whole composition is pleasing to the eye.

Jane

IMHO the focus whether right or wrong makes no dif. It is the end result and how one sees it...and sight is pretty much the key in this shot of the eye focus.

Hello Gary, Fantastic macro shot of this fly, I love how the fly suck its food. Very sharp and colorful, great POV and composition..well done

Nice work Gary creative effort with the very shallow dof I think you got the focus well, great stuff! tfs rgds Necip.

Hello Gary,
Nice Macro showing the eye of this insect,
very sharp I like DOF very well composed,TFS.
best regards/Lawhill

Hi Gary.
Total lack of DOF has really made a good image. The eye of the fly is the most important detail to get sharp to hold interest and you have managed to do just that. Great first attempt at macro with nice end result.
Well done
