Hello,

whilst returning back from a very wet but great week in Scotland recently, we made our way begrudgingly back south though Glen Coe and past here, The Three Sisters. This area marks the start of the higher ground in the north of the UK and is often referred to as the Gateway to the Highlands.
I was looking through my mainly disastrous shots from this gloomy trip when i came across this, which i thought i would dedicate to Emma (Aramok), who has not been well recently and who i know loves Scotland and it's mountains in particular. Hopefully the sight of some familiar peaks might help cheer her up a little.

Some general facts about Glen Coe from Wikipedia:

Glen Coe (Gleann Comhann in Gaelic ) is a glen in the Highlands of Scotland. It lies in the southern part of the Lochaber committee area of Highland Council, and was formerly part of the county of Argyll. It is often considered one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in Scotland, and is a part of the designated National Scenic Area of Ben Nevis and Glen Coe. The narrow glen shows a dramatically grim grandeur, shut in on both sides by wild and precipitous mountains. Towards Invercoe the landscape acquires a softer beauty.

The name Glen Coe is often said to mean 'Glen of Weeping', perhaps with some reference to the infamous Massacre of Glencoe which took place there in 1692. However, 'Gleann Comhann' does not translate as 'Glen of Weeping'. In fact the Glen is named for the River Coe which runs through it, and bore this name long prior to the 1692 incident. The name of the river itself is believed to predate the Gaelic language and its meaning is not known. One possibility is that it was named for a tribe once living in the area; however this remains speculation. It is also possible that the name stems from an individual personal name, Chomain or Comhan.

It was a very gloomy day when this was taken, so i've tried to liven this up a bit with more PP than usual:

shot in RAW, levels adjusted, curves, increased exposure, cropped a little of the FG, converted to JPEG, resized for TN and sharpened.

It's not the best shot, but i hope you like it anyway.

Thanks for looking..

Hey Chap

I remeber this place well, is an awe inspiring spot which there are few photographers that could do it justice.
Given the conditions on the day, you have certainly given it the justice it deserves.

I just want to know whats behind those mountains, a trek up there over the top and back down Geln Etive is in order...

Cheers mate
Paul

Hi Paul. Nice of you to think of Emma. Once again you have worked wonders with you kit. you have an eye for this kind of shot. very good compostion. with detail and colour. well done TFS. good notes to with the picture.

Nick..

Hi Paul!
Thanks for the very interesting notes that accompany so well your wonderful picture. I like that kind of atmosphere very much. You call it gloomy, I'd prefer call it wonderful weather for taking pictures! I just regret that you wanted to correct artificially what nature makes so well. In my opinion no need of pushing your picture in postprocessing. The natural way would be far better...

Kind regards
Markus

I find the light and color in this image to be quite interesting. It is unusual... very different from what I am used to here in the U.S. What time of day was it taken? I like the composition very much. The inclusion of the road gives wonderful scale to the scene and leads the viewer far into it.

Hello Paul,
A beautiful landscape!
So naked so green...
I like the lines and the rainy weather; rain can look good as it is photographed by others, hehehehe!

Hi Paul,
Simply a majestic setting, peaceful, so very chilly and wet. The shades of green look so soothing to the eyes and the sky with the sun breaking out from the clouds add a nice effect. The serpentine road add so much interest here. Excellent POV to portray this charming ambience and very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Paul.
Havn't been here much lately. Feeling a bit uninspired. Need to get back into it :)Very beautiful. Awesome light and colour. Great POV. I love that dramatic sky. It seems so typical of the Highlands. I was there in the height of summer about 10 years ago and I remember it looked the same then. I guess that's the beauty of the place. Very well captured once again.
Best regards, Steve.

Hello Paul,
Wonderful composition showing this very green mountainous landscape. It looks very dramatic with the low clouds coming down and covering the distance with a haze. Very beautiful capture!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Beautiful scenic view of the Scottish landscape. Incredibly rugged mountains with lush green foliage. Interesting the way the clouds are sitting right down over the mountains. Well done.

Hi Paul

This is how I would image Scotland would look. Vibrant green of the rolling hills. Light pouring through the clouds and a low mist rolling in. Very atmospheric shot with great light and a wonderful composition

hello Paul,
Beautiful landscape with great atmosphere. I like the way the path is curving between the mountains and the point of view you have chosen.
Best regards
Anne

Hello Paul,
Great dedication, I'm certain Emma will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
The POV and composition are excellent, as is the detail, depth, and color..It does look like a gateway, as your eye moves left to right and up the valley.
Very well done.
Howard

Hi Paul,
I'm glad you posted this photo. The weather looks a lot like what I had the day after we visited Loch Etive. I am sure that Emma will apreciate this photo since it will bring back many good memories.
I do like the composition and the wonderful sky. But I also feel that the colors are slightly off. I like what Markus did in the WS.
TFS,
Niek

I like this a lot, Paul. There is a wonderful quality to the light. It seems to fit the soft feeling of the landscape, too. And you've managed to capture both. Well done.

Hi Paul

A wonderful thing to do for Emma! I'm sure she appreciates it. All of us who know here from some time wish only the best for her.

This is indeed a lovely shot that earns its charisma to that gloomy weather. I really like the way those peaks look surrounded by those heavy clouds.
You did very well in the PP and therefore the FG looks very nice, too, that green bringing up the frame well.
Very good exposure and perspective as well, creating a charming composition.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Paul

I'm honored that you would post a picture for me and one of my favourite places as well. I remember one of my walks up into the hidden valley which lies between 2 of the 3 sisters. It is a great area and the walk was stunning, though the climb out of the valley in deep snow on New Year's Day 2006 was very difficult, and in low cloud as well so no photos. Well you brough a smile to my face! Thank you.

You seem to find all of the bad weather in Scotland, one of these times we'll have to me up there and I'll get you some good weather! But at least you have make a decent photo from it. Nicely done and Thanks

Emma
