Blackthorn,Prunus spinosa...Stiff thorny bush, growing up to about 4 metres in hight. propagates by "suckering" forming an impenetrable, dense mass of thickets.

These shrubs of the Prunus family, make up the bulk of the hedgerows in my area.

very dense, they act as a good windbreak (when in leaf) and a good shield for wildlife. They can be heavily trimmed back, but recover easily forming solid hedges.

Flowers are white, 10-15mm across, they appear before the leaves, giving a nice contrast with the black twigs and background. They generally flower a fortnight after Cherry-plum , and a month before Hawthorne.

Leaves are oval and carry a matt finish...the fruit is the "sloe":- diminutive little blackish plum, and tongue numbingly tart...but goes great with Gin!!! Widespread and common...

This was taken at 0730 am on 15th March (BST) This one was imaged with 2 flash guns attached and a very high shutter speed was used..1/1600 and at f/2.8:-(previous upload had settings of f/7.8 and shutter speed 1/320))

Flash was used, the flash was not aimed directly, but diffused a bit.(old plastic milk carton brought into service...)

This was taken "on the tree", Sun at my back, cloudy/overcast...

All critiques very welcome...good or bad...all are positive if ability improves.

This image was just cropped/sized. No PP work whatever.

ISO 100
Shutter 1/1600
F-f/2.8

Flash used, tripod and remote shutter used, mirror locked.

Hi Howard,
yuo are fast becoming a flower expert here! I'm enjoying your posts alot as i must confess to knowing little on the subject.
This one is a beauty too, nicely composed and exposed with some sharp detail - good work.

Hello Howard

Another lovely capture of this blossom.
We are still blanketed in 3 ft of snow here,so the beauty of spring is weeks away.I enjoy these shots you are posting very much.
Excellent sharp detail, with excellent POV and DOF.The dark BG makes a nice contrast for the light petals.
Nicely done.
TFS

Hi Howard, beautiful composition with lovely white flowers, wonderful details and great sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

This looks a lot like Cherry Tree blossoms found in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. Well composed and presented in this picture.
