I went on a wonderful hike through the country side surrounding Aberlour. Via a few hill tops and country roads I ended up at the Lour Burn. I followed the river down stream ending at Linn Falls. Here I spent about an hour capturing the falls.

The Linn Falls undoubtedly had mystical connotations for the ancient Celts of these parts. The thickly wooded slopes contain oaks, alders and rowan trees, all of religious significance to the Druids who worshipped there. Stories about the evil spirits who supposedly inhabited the falls were handed down through the years, some local people fearing to go there in case they were lured to a watery grave. Even today there is a sense of the supernatural surrounding this beautiful setting.

Also known as Linn of Ruthrie (the word "linn" means waterfall or the pool into which a waterfall cascades), it is the Lour Burn's last fling before it joins the Spey.

For this photo I used a full grad ND. This gave me the opportunity to slow down the shutter speed without over exposing. My tripod was standing in the water, and days later I still had some water dripping out of the legs. Luckely its all carbon.

My pp work consisted out of a small adjustment on the white balance and conversion to 16-bit TIFF. Levels, curves, USM, frame, resize and conversion to 8-bit JPEG were done in Photoshop.

Hi Niek,
You have shared a fantastic and peaceful place here! We will have a trek to Uludag on Sunday and we will see and capture spring of Nilufer river and falls. I hope I able to take nice photos like yours.
Greetings
Ibrahim

Hi Niek
this is a lovely peaceful scene. It looks perfectly exposed to me. Did you mean "full grad ND" or "full ND"? I think one would use a full ND in order to slow the shutter for the whole scene.... I've got full ND filters but I've never used them as I've discovered that rarely want to slow the shutter down. I like the way the waterfall and water zig zags through the frame. Nice work.

Hi Niek,

Long time since I last commented one of your pictures. I was very busy these past months and little or no time for pictures and critiques.
Very well done and good use of the shutter speed. Nice POV with this 2 step water feature. The tree on the left is precisely positioned with the BG fall and created a nice felling of depth. The use of a polarized filter would also have help to have a slow shutter speed and reduce reflection on the calmer water surface.

PC :)

Lovely composition, Niek. I love the diagonal going on between the two falls. I like the long exposure, too. My only suggestion is that it feels just a bit tight, if there wasn't something in the way, backing off to 22 (or 20mms) would have left a bit more breathing room. But that's just an after-the-fact suggestion on a wonderful piece of work.
Mike

Ah the full grad ND! I've been toying with the idea of getting one myself for such a purpose, but currently I just use my polarizer for those extra 2 F-stops of darkness. Great composition and detail here Niek. The falls themselves however seem a touch on the warm side for white balance.

Hi Niek.
Wow. I'm having a great time viewing your Scottish pics. They are really wonderful. Lovely composition. Lots of interest. I particularly like the movement of the water and the moss on the rocks. All of which lead the eye back to the falls. Very beautiful. One of your best. Very well done.
Best regards, Steve.

Hello Niek,
Thank you for your useful information in using the full grad ND and the slow shutter speed,
I will really try it out myself one day, becuase falls is always my favorite landscape photo, and I loved this one specially! It gives so much peace with the water blurry with the slow shutter speed!
thanks for sharing indeed, Niek
have a good weekend
cheers
Tony

Hi Niek,
great use of a slow shutter speed. A beautiful scene, with good lighting and colour,
regards
Matt.

Hi Niek,

What a wonderful place! I like long exposure time and tulle efect on the water. Perfect POV and attractive composition. Well saturated natural colours. Special thanks for this amazing panaroma. A favourite!

Hello Nick,
I like much this kind of photograph with the long exposure, most difficult is to have the sheets clear, it is a very beautiful work , perfect shot,

Hi Niek,
WOW! I think you nailed this one perfectly. Great quality soft light. The tonal range and colors are excellent. I love the long exposure effect on the water here. Your choice of composition and framing were excellent. Your eyes just follow the river up the falls.

whoa! I don't know what to say except that this is stunning. You must be very proud of this shot. The composition can't be faulted and the exposure is spot on. This is the sort of picture I like to get on birthday cards!

Hi Niek,
Wow...what a tranquil environment and a serene scene captured. Awesome steps of this waterfall and you have illustrated the water flow so well. A fabulous place to be in and the setting is just romantic. Excellent POV to portray the whole ambience and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hello Niek,
This is a wonderful composition from a nice POV and with a fine depth of focus, although I'm not keen on the milky blurred look of water, but that's just my view - I think water movement is too beautiful to distort. Otherwise I love it and the colours and the feeling of being there!
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Niek,
alot of depth and good choice of shutter speed to keep some detail in the flow of the water. The peat in the waterfall adds some lovely tones with the moss giving the forground nice detail, the full grad has worked well.

HI Nieck
Very good compo, nice white and woderful landscape.
Regards.

Hi Niek!

When I compare your falls to mine... Hmm, I realize once again how much I have to learn! And it's so great to say that.

When I'm writing a critique, I like to find different arguments to say why I like or why I like a picture less. In this case, it's very difficult because... I just like it! From my point of view, one can't do better: the point of view, the color and lighting management and the composition are perfect. And moreover, your picture generates deep emotions, which is, in my opinion, the main goal of a nature picture.

And I appreciate very much the helpful and interesting notes. In this case, ?i'm particulary interested by the fact you used a filter. I'm looking forward to use my brand new neutral grey filter as well. If I remember well, you gave me the tip, but I didn't yet have the opportunity to try it out. Maybe next week, when I'll be in Norway for more than 3 weeks...

:-)

Kind regards
Markus

Hello Niek,
Impressive definition, resulting in pin sharp details and great colours!
Image is well composed with a good diagonal movement, and the moss on the rocks is so natural!

Hi Niek,
this composition looks fabulous, what a POV to capture this little paradise.
Shutter speed, colors and scenery are excellent.

Hi Niek.
This is superb lighting, technique, exposure and colour. Wonderful detail and composition.
Beautiful image

Kathleen

Beautifully captured waterfall. The 2 second exposure to capture water flow is primarily what makes this image good. Composition, color, exposure and post processing are excellent.

Hallo Niek,

Prachtig. Groeten en tot TFS Bob

Fantastic capture Niek, your composition is faultless here. Good speed on the water and excellent control of exposure. Very well done.
