Currently needing a distraction, so I thought I would spend the next few minutes on TN before I go off to the hospital for my MRI results...

Following on from my holiday back in July, I have posted this picture as another of the wondeful sunsets we had in the Orkney Islands. One of the problems I had in the Orkney's with sunsets is that there is very little in the way of trees or mountains to get a suitable foreground simply becuase of the size of the islands and that fact that there are very few large trees there. It made me have to rethink what I had to do to get the landscape shots I usually take and gave me a challenge which stumped me for the first 24hrs until I was able to get out of my normal landscape mode of thinking.

So what we have here are the grasses on the edge of a cliff looking out over the Atlantic Ocean.

Taken with -2EV underexposure and a long zoom at ISO400, I was testing my ability here in more ways that one. No tripod becuase I was standing on a peat moor with cattle in the background and also standing in water at sunset... any specs you see will not be lens dust, it will be the biting insects that were eating me alive! I left the flash off becuase I wanted a really dark FG for the silhoutte effect.

Taken in RAW, converted to jpeg with histogram balanced, this is full frame and uneditted (with the exception of a midge which was in the way!)

Anyhow, need to leave now for hospital so will catch up with everyone later.

Thanks
Emma

Hi Emma,

A nice capture with great use of the light conditions, well exposed and I like the silhouettes of the strws in front of compo, hope all went ok in the hospital,

Regards,
Paul

Hi Emma,
You made a beautiful sunset landscape. The colours are natural and the focus on the grass is a great idea.
Thanks for sharing your composition,

Claude

Hi Emma,
This is another beauty again. I like the effect of the warm sunset and the shallow DOF a lot. It does make you rethink and come up with a more creative approuch to photography. The long focal also helped to loose the feel of depth. Wonderful work again.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Emma this is so beautifull the shallow DOF and the sunset in the background really is creative photography well seen and executed I love the crisp sharpness of the silouetting tfs rgds Necip

I'm an sending good thoughts your way and am hoping for the best.

Your photo is lovely. I love the color, light, and the silhouetted grasses. I suspect that your image is straight and that everything was in fact tilting to the right... even the foreground. I personally would have to straighten it... so there was some horizontal reference point. That probably says too much about ME! I am forever straightening things...

Good Luck

Hello Emma,
Sunsettings are my great passion. I do not know, what so attracts me to this just the moment of the end day, but if I could, I would photograph only sunsettings. This is at You splendid. Especially beautifully looks the foreground against the background of the burning-hot sky. It is the splendid work, superbly executed, beautiful colouring and wonderful quality of photo.
Best regards from Poznan,
Jurek

Hi Emma
I did not realize you weren't well... I wish you strength and hope.

Your sunset is gorgeous, the colours are warm and rich. The silhouette of the grass is beautifully shown. Nicely balanced and composed.

Hello Emma

I hope you are feeling better. This is a beautiful display of colour, rich with various hues of red and orange. The composition is lovely and the silhouettes of the grasses is quite elegant. The low POV creates a nice effect.A super combination of a common subject (grass) and the use of light and colour.TFS
