Away from the clouds and the cloud theme - couple more of those can be posted, but they need a little more attention first, so I though I would post this one instead.

I'll state from the beginning that this one is not about the building, but the building showing the spot of light of sunshine against the obvious storm in the background. Incidently, it didn't actually rain on me that much... it just got very dark... I guess someone else got very wet, but then this is an area which has a lot of hydroelectric plants for a reason.

So what have we got, well a gap in the tree line as I was driving back from a days hike, causing me to do an emergency stop (one of the joys of holidaying in the middle of nowhere out of the tourist season - no traffic to have to worry about - maybe 20 cars in 24hrs...) - ok back to story - ...emergency stop, pulling the car off the road in the same instance, dashing outside (bitterly cold, no time for fleece), diving into the boot, to fish the camera and long lens out of the rucksack which is very well sealed. Inside the rucksack is another waterproof liner - that way when I fall into water... - pulling out camera, fishing vainely for the big lens carefully wrapped un in extra clothing and lens bag, swapping lenses, running down to the shoreline and ...

well luckily, this is a very well practised manoeuvre and the light was there long enough to get 3 pictures, one of wich was OOF because I was trying my hardest to hold a 300mm zoom handheld (for those who don't know me, I have a very bad left wrist in a permanent support, so this is not my best move...), then there was this one and then there was one with the spot of light fading...

So Scottish light and dark in the same photo, also if you look really closely, you will see loads of different layers of colours in the trees... and the white 'dots' on the building (a prison!) are gulls, they have taken over the island and it is know known as Gull Island... The white patches on the mountain are snow, the shoreline is not straight or level and straightening it leaves the building at an even odder angle than it is normally...

This kind of light tends only to occur in the colder winter months. It is crytsal clear, very bright and dark at the same time, and can make phography very trickey indeed leaving some areas underexposed and others over exposed even when the are next to each other. I'm not sure if in this situation an ND filter would have actually helped - any advice?

Taken in RAW, converted to jpeg, cropped, resized, USM'ed and border added. Colours and light are all real.

Hi Emma,

This is an interesting shot. The light sure grabs and holds one's attention. I like it a lot. We get that kind of light sometimes in the autumn...little can beat bright light on an autumn colored tree with a black menacing sky above. Thanks for the interesting note too.

Hi Emma,
Very special atmosphere in this landscape, very well seen by you.
I like the different colours and the special light fall. Good composition and POV.
Good job.
Thx and regards, Ruud

Cracking capture Emma, the light is this shot is just wonderful and apart from the slight highlight, very well handled. I think a ND Grad filter would have helped or shooting in Raw underexposed by a stop. I really like this, well done.

Very mysterious shot, I love the ambiance in it. Strange lighting that gives the picture a beautiful look. Thanks.

Very interesting shot Emma.
I like the way that you have worked the light in this picture to show only a glint of the hill in the background.
Very nice composition and use on the lighting in the foreground, and the water looks.
TFS!!!!

JC

What a story, I was spellbound with your story Emma!
Yes I can see loads of different layers of colours in the trees getting darker and darker to the sky. But wow! The light on the waters edge and the little island and gulls are very eye-catching. Super catch - you went by at just the perfect time! BRAVO!
Janice

Hello Emma,
very impressive landscape of great beauty and mysterious depth. A wonderful painting, perfectly composed, overwhelming colours in delightful, dramatical contrast.
Great contribution to TN and to beautiful Scotland.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Hi Emma.
I find this a very interesting capture, with a great subject and a strong lighting and contrast.
The only thing, is that I keep turning slightly my head at the right to look at it :)
Is it the tower which is not vertical or is the photo slightly out of level?
Very nice photo, TFS.
