I took this shot on Lunga in the Treshnish Isles, close to the Isles of Mull and Staffa. Like most days recently - it was very wet! The Treshnish Isles are a great place to view puffins, because, once you have scrambled over the boulders on the shore, held your nose as you pass the rotting kelp and struggled up the muddy path to the raised beach - there are hundreds of puffins right there in front of you. The puffins are not particularly nervous of people - though it is not a good idea to go closer than about 6 feet or 2 meters - in anycase you might twist an ankle as a puffin burrow collapsed on you!

This puffin had obviously gone a little 'rain happy' as it was collecting nesting materials. It may even have been starting a new nest as the heavy rains have led to a lot of nesting failure this year.

The Treshnish Isles are a remote chain of uninhabited
islands and skerries, located in the Inner Hebrides
between the islands of Coll and Mull, in southwest
Scotland. The archipelago comprises six main islands and several smaller islets, skerries and reefs, and has a coastline characterised by low cliffs and steep rocky shores. The islands are of national importance for their breeding seabird colonies, especially for the storm petrel Hydrobates pelagicus. The Treshnish Isles are also of international importance as a traditional wintering locality for the Greenland barnacle goose Branta leucopsis. In addition, the islands support an internationally important breeding colony of grey seals Halichoerus grypus, contributing approximately 3% of the annual UK grey seal pup production.

Hi James,
Well composed, I like the POV and pose with the puffin's mouth full of nesting material..The droplets of rain atop the head add well also.
Great detail in the head & beak, with this natural close environment framing the subject nicely :)
Well done!

Hi James,
Nice shot, I like your pov with the green in the fg.
Nice expression on his face and very nice to look at.
Here in Holland it is not much better with the weather.
Sometimes the sun is around but you never know when it starts raining again.

Nick..

What a superb capture of this image of a Puffin collecting its nesting material James. Puffin's to me never look quite real, they always seem to looks so perfect. Excellent image, I'm impressed.
Cheers,
Debbie

Hi James, what I like about this one is how you've captured the Puffin in his natural habitat, busy. He's actually doing something here. The composition looks very natural. The light and colour for the conditions are very good. Call it play, but I've opened a workshop thinking I might be able to provide a little more contrast, and lighten his face a bit, to provide you with another option.

Thanks, John

Hi James,
It's hard to go wrong with puffins. This one is no exception with the sticks it's carrying. Interesting light with the reflection off the face. Good job, as usual. Regards,
Hakan
