This is a Shield Bug(or a close relative) which I found at Whistling Sands in Pembrokshire, Wales.
They are specks of sand on its back...it gives a sense of size.

Shield bug and stink bug (or shieldbug and stinkbug) are common names applied to various insects of the Hemiptera order (the "true bugs"), in the Heteroptera suborder. Shield bugs have glands in their thorax between the first and second pair of legs which produce a foul smelling liquid. This liquid is used defensively to deter potential predators and is sometimes released when the bugs are handled carelessly. The stink comes from aldehydes such as CH3–(CH2)2–CH=CH–CHO, and is chemically similar to pheromones.

The nymphs, similar to adults except smaller and without wings, also have stink glands.

The nymphs and adults have piercing mouthparts which most use to suck sap from plants, although some eat other insects. When they group in large numbers they can become significant pests.

The superfamily Pentatomoidea consists of generally shield-shaped true bugs, with the families listed to the right.

Other species that resemble shield bugs are found in the Coreoidea superfamily.

Hi Joe,
superb macro, the grains of sand look like little diamonds clinging to his back and give a great sense of scale. Great compositon and exposure, the detail you have caught is excellent. Very well done.

Hello Joe

Nice capture of this very common shield bug. Nice sharpness and dof with the focus on the head and a well blurred background.

From the colours and especially the orange antennas with black tips I am quite sure it is a Coreus marginatus (In English it is known as Dock Leaf Bug and also as Brown Squash Bug). The adult as well as the nymph on your picture are vegetarians and feed on plants only – especially plants from the Polygonaceae family. The nymph has to go through 5 levels before it transform to adult and this one I believe is in the last level because of the very dark colours very similar to the adult.

Have a nice weekend

bonjour joey
une bonne macro mais au vu de tes reglages je pense que tu aurais pu diminuer la vitesse pour privilegier un peu la profondeur de champ.

Hi Joe,
nicely composed and good focused image of this bug.
Good note.
In Mexico they sell live stink bugs in the market to eat!
Tried one and it tasted like cherry candy. :-)

You actually must love those things Joey:-) I think you may have even started the trend of stinkbug lovers on TN...I say that with tongue in cheek, but certainly appreciate your good notations and photo..which is why I am writing this...so to speak...

Hi joey, What is on the top of the bug. White color one? The angle of the shot is very fine. The composition is very fine. Ganesh

Quite an amazing PoV with more details than I'd have imagined possible with so small a creature
Well done

Hi Joe,
Very weird looking Shield Bug and you have captured it well. The focus is a bit soft but I like your POV to portray its features. I wonder what those small granules on its body are. Great pose and a superb composition. Kudos.
TFS.
