An Oasis of life in the midst of cold hexagonal basalt caught my attention immediately as I wandered over the slippery stones of the Giants Causeway. The Giants Causeway is a region located at the tip of Northern Ireland and is renowned world wide for its beauty and unique geological qualities.

The region is made of a volcanic rock called basalt which flowed out of the earths crust some 50-60 million years ago. When it cooled and solidified the chemical elements in the basalt formed approximately some 40,000 geometric, mostly hexagonal, shapes.

Hi Stephen,
This year I hope I will get there. In the mean time I must settle for this lovely shot.
Great composition with the green pool.
Great details all around and amazing colors.
This is just great!
TFS!

Long time no see Stephen. I think I remember that you posted a shot of this same location before??? It is really interesting. The foreground is greaat against the hill of hexagonal columns in the back. I really like seeing the sea beyond.

Hi Stephen,
This is one of the places on my to-see-list... The geological formations are amazing. Your POV, composition and exposure control in this photo emphasizes the strong effect of the landscape in an excellent way. very well done. TFS
Selen

great pov and unusual to see the foreground lighter than the distance. nice detail and realy shows the otherworldly beauty of the place.

Hi Stephen,
Stunning image!
It has a lot of visual impact.
It's very good the glimpses of green/live inbetween all that hexagonal stones.
Excellent POV, exposure and DOF to get such fine details.
I like so much also thye composition made.
Thanks a lot for introduce us this wonder place on Ireland.
Best regards,
JM

Marvellous place Stephen. Technically perfect picture.Excellent composition. This is such an amazing view. Very well done. Tfs. Stev

The landscape is so unique, I've seen this such kind of columnar joint structure in limited andesite or basalt body, but never see in very wide coverage as this area. The green little grassy area in the middle really fit to the photo title, I guess you play a little contrast here.
Excellent presentation, make me really want to go there, TFS

Hi Stephen
Belle présentation de ce joli paysage volcanique,c'est vraiment spécial de voir ce que la nature peut accomplir.Les couleurs et la nettetée sont très bonnes, belle composition car la prise est vraiment parfaite .
Au revoir et félicitation ....JP

Hello Stephen,

Splendid landscape shot. An oasis of bright colous admist interesting rock formations. Superb lighting and POV. Very nicely composed and framed. Kudos.
TFS.

An incredible landscape which I had the pleasure of visiting 15 (!!) years ago.
The foreground is stunning with the contrast between rock, sand and seaweed. I (personally) find the bg a tad too dark, but this is just my opinion.
Great work, thanks for sharing.

Hi Steve and welcome back :)
It's great to see you here and posting again!

And it's even greater to see one more photos of these hexagonal basalts - your speciality (among other things). :))
I think these photos really represent you here on TN, because not only you have quite a numbet of them, but you also know how to take them in order for them to seems amazing every single time.

This here is another terrific shot with, as you said, an oasis of "green" in the middle of all that grey "sea".
The composition here is terrific and the textures ofall these rocks are great. The DOF you used keeps everything in very good focus and the use of the circular polarizer really helped you get the best of all the colors there.
What i also like here is this excellent perspective that shows both sides of the hexagonal basalts - both the upper POV (in the FG) and from the side (in the BG). That really adds to the overall imact of the picture.
Splendid work, my friend!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Steve, your words, Oasis of life, suits this very much. And the heavy sky and the dark rocks emphasises the beauty of the colours. Amazing rockformations too. TFS
Janice

Nice composition.

I didn't knew that you had stuff like that in the U.K.

Sharpness and colours are great.

Hello Stephen,
Absolutely incredible and beautiful scene.
Your masterful use of light and composition makes this amazing natural place even more dramatic. Breathtaking.
TFS. : )

Hello Stephen,
What a fantastic shot! Great colours, adn DOF, amazing composition and details. Contrast betwee the rocks and the "green oazis" in the FG is also amazing!
This phot is simple the best :)
Best greetings,
Radomir

Hi Steve,
How is life treating you these days? This is another marvelous photo from that day at the Giant Causeway. I really love the combination of the dark rock and the brighter sea weeds. Its really nice how you were able to illuminate them. The shapes of the rocks make this all look kind of organic. The mood created by the dark clouds makes the photo a tad misterious.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Stephen,
Very nice contribution. I have been there many years ago and was completely overhelmed by the beauty of this place. Still have many slides done there - just need transfer them to digital :-)
Anyway, I like very much the nice climat on your photo, strange "approaching storm" light and nice contrast between the rocks and the vivid green algae. Indeed, looks primaeval :-)
Best greetings,
Michal

Hi Stephen

Wonderfull landscape !! are you on an another earth??

Mad

Hello Stephen,
I have always loved your pictures of Giants Causeway. This is probably one of best. Love the contrast between dark basalt and vivid plants. The oasis makes a superb FG but the BG with the "hill" and dark sky is also striking.
Excellent work!

Magnificient shot! Wonderful composition and pov. The lighting makes this an incredible picture. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Stephen
Again beautiful landscape picture that you've presented.
Excellent exposition allowing to see the beauty and feel mood of this special place. (I can say I was lucky as I've visited Giants Causeway).
I admire the shapness of the picture and its bright and natural colours.
Thanks for sharing
Ania
