I've got the bug after getting my first dragonfly the other day so I made a return visit to the ponds today.
This shot was taken at a pond which is surrounded by woodland.I spotted some large carp in there near to the ponds edge.
This is a male Common Darter (Sympetrium striolatum).
Flight time June to early November.
It can be confused with the Ruddy Darter at first sight but the patterning of the orange red abdomen is distinctly different from the bright red abdomen of the Ruddy Darter which is waisted.
The female is a pale yellow colour (I'll post a shot of her later).
As they age,the yellow of the female changes to a grey and the male loses colouring in favour of grey-a part grey part red abdomen is the sign of an aging male.

Ooh, you've really been bitten by the bug, haven't you? You'll be getting withdrawal symptoms with the rest of us when the season ends ;-))
Nice capture with very good DOF keeping all of the beast within DOF range. Good colours.

Ha ha, you're addicted! Me too :-). It's a very good one Andy. Great composition and DOF. You've got the detail in teh wings very well. Congratulations!

Also the legs on the Common have yellow stripes where the Ruddy's legs are all-black - I apologise if you know this already.

Nice capture Andy. Great detail and lovely colours. Interesting note. Very nicely done. tahnx for sharing.

I see you've got the bug ;-)
Nice capture Andy, good dof but it seems a bit bright in the background.

Thanks for making the return visit, Andy, as it resulted in a very fine capture. Good diagonal positioning of the darter in the frame, and nice color contrast against the greenery. DOF could be a little shallower but it looks really great as is. Looking forward to the shot of the female one.

Very good one again Andy,
Very good capture again, with good colours, and a great note, very good job you did

Nice capture Andy
Nice colors and good DOF.
Well done

Andy, We're all addicts to shooting these ;-) They have very beautiful colors. Good shot with lots of detail on the dragonfly.
I noticed a little while ago that the common darter exists in different colours ranging from green to red. Some are more red than others. Is that just because the are or like someone said that this is caused by warming up?
Greetings, Jan

Bella composicion Andy.
Excelente perspectiva y encuadre.
Colores un tanto fuertes (son naturales o los has modificado posteriormente), pero aceptables.
Tal vez una F4 o mayor hubiera dado una mejor profundidad de campo.
Bien hecho.

Beautiful composition Andy.
Excellent perspective and frame.
Somewhat strong colors (are they natural or you have modified them later?), but acceptable.
Perhaps a F4 or bigger had given one better depth of field.
Well done

Andy
Nice, Crisp &clear, good details on the wings and body and good note. Now comes the difficult part, get the same shot on an uncluttered BG. That is the nect level, and jusy keep on trying, it happens.

Andy, this is a very nice macro.

Vivid colors, great contrast. The diagonal composition is great too.
