This is my first photo of a Chaffinch. I feel it could have been a lot better but I have put it up for your comments,,,,please!

Chaffinch
Fringilla coelebs
The chaffinch is the UK’s second commonest breeding bird, and is arguably the most colourful of the UK's finches. Its patterned plumage helps it to blend in when feeding on the ground and it becomes most obvious when it flies, revealing a flash of white on the wings and white outer tail feathers. It does not feed openly on bird feeders - it prefers to hop about under the bird table or under the hedge. You’ll usually hear chaffinches before you see them, with their loud song and varied calls.

Where does it live?
Breeding
Anywhere with trees and bushes, including coniferous and deciduous woodland, farmland hedgerows, parks and rural and suburban gardens.
Wintering
Same as breeding habitat.

Where to see it
Around the UK in woodlands, hedgerows, fields, parks and gardens anywhere.

What does it eat?
Insects and seeds.

What does it sound like?
Fast, descending song phrase; 'pink, pink' calls.

When to see it
All year round.

Hi Deborah,
You have presented a great shot of this Chaffinch.
Nice vivid colors,sharpness and details.
Well done.

Nice shot of this colorfull bird.
Andrea

It's interesting to see that your chaffinches also have the viral growths on their legs. It seems to be getting more and more common, and I've seen chaffinches down here that barely use their swollen legs anymore.

Photographically... might have been better with light on the bird and background being more equal.... or "cheat" and tone the background down in PS (!). Also the image could do with being a little sharper, to me it looks just a little soft. Have you found "High Pass Sharpening" yet? It's quite good for sharpening textures like feathers and bark, I tend to use it a lot.

Also, I usually re-sharpen again a little after I resize the image down to 800pix, as resizing seems to soften things a little.

Have a look her for High Pass Technique. http://www.ephotozine.com/techniques/viewtechnique.cfm?recid=355

Deborah,
Your photo is colorful, sharp and well framed.
Great shot!
Jim

hi Deborah,

belle image, la position de l'oiseau est idéal pour en voir le plus possible. Bonnes couleurs, seul la DOF est légèrement améliorable.

Hello Deborah

Lovely picture with wonderful and natural looking colours. Very good sharpness/dof setting off the Chaffinch nicely with nice details and a well blurred background. Great composition with a strong diagonal line made by the branch. All over a very nice picture - well done.

Mogens

Hello Deborah,

This is a well seen and composed shot of the finch. It is a handsom bird and you captured it well. However I might have moved the colour balance toward warmed tones but other then that well done.

Hello Debz,
At all times except the winter, Chaffinches are common in Sweden, but I still can't get a good shot of one: not as good as this one! This has good colouring, is pretty sharp, presented in an excellent composition with pleasing blurred BG, but the only nit is the strange foot: I can't make it out!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Beautiful bird very nicely captured!

Very pretty shot Deb. Excellent coloured presentation. Picture is good arrected. Well done. tfs. Stev

Hi Deborah,
I think compositionally you have done an excellent job. placement of the bird and branch within the frame are well done. The light quality is soft, and your exposure looks very good. Colors across the tonal range a perfect. I agree with Miles it could be a tad sharper. Probably f8 or f11 would have been better, but this would have forced a very slow shutter speed or a boost in ISO sending the noise way up. I think you did a very good job on this little beauty under the circumstances you had at the time.
Scott

Hello Deborah,
You seem to have rock-steady hands to capture this amazingly sharp image of a Chaffinch posing with its best foot forward (literally) on the slanting branch of a tree :-).
The perspective offers a fine view of its richly coloured plumage.
The colourful bokeh BG is another strong feature of this well-handled shot.
Best regards,
Ram

Hi Deborah,
Nice shot indeed of this Chaffinch.
Nice details
Well done.

Hello Deborah,

Hi Deborah

Another very beautiful capture from you!
The diagonal composition here is really wonderful and it presents the entire body of this little caffinch is full focus.
Due to that, all the details are very clear and sharp.
The DOF is excellent and it blurres the BG well, the exposure is nicely managed and it gives you a good saturation for all the colors and tones and the POV is exceptional.

Bravo and TFS
