| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This was taken at the Lyndon Reserve on Rutland Water. We were there to see the Osprey, which we did, but they were too far away for me to get any good shots... so as far as photography was concerned, I had to settle for ducks. This is a Mallard hybrid... based on bill color and the splashes of green in the plumage I think it's a male.
Fortunately there was a volunteer at the hide with a scope set up so that visitors could get a good view. Through it we could almost read the numbers on their bands. Many thanks to the dedicated folks who donate their time as volunteers.
The Osprey project at Rutland is dedicated to the reintroduction of the birds to England after a long absence. We were fortunate enough to go on the day that 5N, a three year old Rutland bred female, returned. She returned last year, but was not of breeding age. Hopes were high that she would come back again this year and take a mate. The news is good, she did find a mate. 5N is now the first wild-fledged English chick to return and breed here for over 150 years.
I could go on but you will find much more concise and interesting information, as well as photos, at the Rutland Osprey Project website. |
