Latin name: Bibio marci

Size: The male, on the left, is about 12 mms long, and the female on the right is about 14 mms long.

Distribution: Found throughout the UK.

Months seen: These hairy little insects are named after St. Marks day, 25th April, when they appear with amazing regularity. They normally all disappear after just a fortnight.

Habitat: Hedgerows and woodland edges.

Food: Nectar.

Special features: When airborne, they fly in a sluggish manner above hedgerows and grass, with their long legs dangling down. They help with the pollination of fruit trees, while their larvae feed on leaf mould.

Hello Joe,
That's a very interesting fly that you've caught very nicely indeed. Good focus on the head and sharp details, I like the beautiful wing and the unusual abdomen that you show so well. Looks good on the yellow flower.
TFS, Ulla

Hey Joe,

May I hand you a tip? If you use spotmetering in your camera for light measurements the camera will focus on the subject. Usually the surroundings become darker of lighter, but light on the subject will be perfect. That way the black parts will still have detail in greytones to bring out the subject even more. Black insects are most difficult by the way.

Good job, greetings Arjuna.

Hello Joey,
Excellent sharp capture of Bibio marci showing well against the buttercup. Well focused with good DOF to emphasise the fly and blurr the BG.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan
