Overview
The moorhen is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird, that is usually found near water. From a distance it looks black with a ragged white line along its body. Up close it is olive-brown on the back and the head and underneath are blue-grey. It has a red bill with a yellow tip. It breeds in the UK in lowland areas, especially in central and eastern England. It is scarce in northern Scotland and the uplands of Wales and northern England. UK breeding birds are residents and seldom travel far.

When to see them
All year round.

What they eat

Hi Hilary,
this is a brilliant shot of this moorhen.
Great composition and POV.
Well done,
Joey

Lol Hil,
Coquette and Gus are outside!!! As spring has come, I lost my cats for the next 4 months ;) What a colorful and noisy fellow that you present us! Its colors are amazing and you caught superb details as I almost can count its feathers. This is an original POV with super reflection in the water and perfect exposure. Its legs, beak and eye all fits together in a perfect color match :) When my cats will come back, I make them play this strange sound and I know that they going to like it a lot : ))) Thanks,
Claudine
Still laughing… :)))) PS Coquette just came back but she had less reaction on this one maybe because it is a duck and that she doesn't know any duck ;)

Hi Hilary,
Nice capture!
A colourful bird on a very good pose.
I like your POV for his side-back image of the moorhen.
Good to see the colorful legs also and their movement under the water.
The textured branch contribute to make a very balanced image.
Well done and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Great capture, Hilary!
Super sharp shot with fine POV, colour, lighting and compo. showing fine plumage details of a Moorhen. Even the legs show wellin the water!
This species is not so easy to photograph in Sweden as it is not so common and very shy.
Well done and TFS!
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Hilary
What a great reflection here,
Wonderful shot of this Moorhen,
Perfect details and POV,
Superb shot.

Regards
Fartash

Like this because of the legs believe it or not Hil, quite rare to see shots of these "paddling" like this. Quite a shy bird too...usually very wary. Best, Brat.

Hello Hilary,
This bird is pretty and you caught it well with the nice reflection.
The "+++" : subject, reflection, colors, sharpness, exposure, useful note...
The "-" : perhaps more space on the right side for composition...
Congratulations and TFS.

Beautiful
Crisp clear.
brilliant colors.
See through water and reflection are both a real plus.
This one bird was very pretty (a good start before to shoot).
Moorhen are common here but all those I know won't let me approach (even in urban areas).
They ignore me but at 10 m distance they all invariably disappear.
Congratulation for managing to get so close (or were you hidden?).

This picture illustrates the significance of aesthetics involved even in nature photography, Hilary.
The angle of the shot, the well delineated colours, contrast, and details on the multi-coloured plumage, the reflection of the bird and its feet immersed in water giving the impression of a painting in oil, the half submerged branch, the grey shade of water -- all these elements contribute to the strong aesthetics manifest in this lovely composition.

Thanks for sharing this supremely beautiful image.

Magnifique couleurs, netteté et composition.
Bravo
Marie

Hi Hil,
An excellent shot on this Moorhen. Soft quality light and a spot on exposure. This brought out amazing colors and intricate detail in the plumage. Even nice colors and detail in the legs below the waterline.
Scott

Hil,

this is a lovely shot.
Catching the movement of it's legs is masterpiece.
Beatifully saturated colours and good clarity throughout.

Hi Hillary.
So unusual shot: unreal water and absolutely natural (an beautiful) bird. Its expressive legs without any waves are looked very funny. Details (including colours) of the bird and mirror reflection, composition of the shot are great. My best regards and TFS.
Alexei.

Hello Hilary,
powerful, frame filling, dynamic image with intense colours that stand in perfect contrast to the neutral grey of waters. And I took the chance of listening to the moorhen. What a sound! Thank you. With best regards,
Peter
