Hi everyone, I'm not sure what species of wasp this is but here's a bit on wasps anyway, thanks for looking:

A wasp is any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is not a bee or ant. The suborder Symphyta includes the sawflies and wood wasps, which differ from members of Apocrita by having a broader connection between the mesosoma and metasoma. In addition to this, Symphyta larvae are mostly herbivorous and "caterpillarlike", whereas those of Apocrita are largely predatory or "parasitic" (technically known as parasitoid).

The most familiar wasps belong to Aculeata, a division of Apocrita, whose ovipositors are adapted into a venomous stinger. Aculeata also contains ants and bees. In this respect, insects called "velvet ants" (the family Mutillidae) are technically wasps.

A narrower but popular definition of the term wasp is any member of the Aculeate family Vespidae, which includes (among others) the well known yellowjackets (Vespula, Dolichovespula spp.) and hornets (Vespa spp.).

Hello Joey,
I think that this is the first time that I see this specie of wasp. Its colors are amazing and I like this movement you caught and excellent details. The sun makes it brilliant and you did a good composition. Well done and TFS,
Claudine

Hello Joe,
Fine macro of what I think is a species of Digger Wasp, probably Astata stigma. Your macro, though limited in DOF, shows spikes on the lower part of the middle pair of legs. These are used to carry a paralized bug, like a shield bug, to its burrow in sandy soil to feed its larvae.
It would be nice if there was a hymenopterist on TN to confirm my ID suggestion.
Great contribution to TN!
Well done and TFS!
Ivan

Hi Joe,
A great picture of this wasp!
You did it pretty well with the S3 and the focus here, I know is not always easy to get a shot like this.
I think you took good advantage of the plentful light there.
Got a lot of sharp and clear details on the wasp, so we can have a very good idea of how it looks like.
I like the wide composition you made with this crop to fit the branch and the subject.
Well done and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Joey

Another very nice and sharp macro photo from you!
I really like the vivid colors here and the strong contrast between the red of the abdomen and the pitch black of the rest of its body!
The focus is great and the exposure is spot-on.
The little shallow DOF is the only nit here, in my opinion; you could have used a bigger f-stop to get all of the body and legs in full focus because the shutter speed allowed it...but it looks ok this way, too :)

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Wow! Do you bait these adn sit with bee gear on? I'm allergic..to everything, but even baby wasps...Wonderful macro control you have...and a lot of patience....

bonjour

Hello Joe!
As for me it is some species of parasitic wasps from family Ichneumonidae or Braconidae. I believe that this specimen was only about 4-8mm but it would be nice to know its size :)
According to technical aspects of photo a little better DOF would be nice :) On the other hand I know how difficult is to take a good quality picture of so small and mobile insect.
TFS and have a nice afternoon!
Radomir
