I happened to glance out the front window and spied this Wood Pigeon in a tree on the other side of The High Street. I thought the colors were nice, the bird against all that greenery. Being on the the third floor I couldn't do much about the POV... so there was no help for those branches across the bird. I'm not sure what the tree is, it might be an ash or a rowan, but the pigeon was feasting on the flower buds. If anyone can identify the tree for me I will update this posting.

This from Wikipedia:

The Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) is a member of the family Columbidae, doves and pigeons.

In the colder northern and eastern parts of its European and western Asiatic range the Wood Pigeon is a migrant, but in southern and western Europe it is a well distributed and often abundant resident.

The three Western European Columba pigeons, Wood Pigeon, Stock Pigeon, and Rock Pigeon, though superficially alike, have very distinctive characteristics; the Wood Pigeon may be identified at once by its larger size at 38–43 cm, and the white on its neck and wing. It is otherwise a basically grey bird, with a pinkish breast.

It breeds in trees in woods, parks and gardens, laying two white eggs in a simple stick nest which hatch after 17 to 19 days. Wood pigeons seem to have a preference for trees near roadways and rivers.

The Wood Pigeon is gregarious, often forming very large flocks outside the breeding season. Most of its food is vegetable, taken from open fields or gardens and lawns; young shoots and seedlings are favoured, and it will take grain.

Wood Pigeon in EnglandThe call is a characteristic cooing (coo-coo-coo-cu-cu). This species can be an agricultural pest, and it is often shot, being a legal quarry species in most European countries. It is wary in rural areas, but often quite tame where it is not persecuted.

I cropped the image for composition. In Paint Shop Pro Photo XI I used the color fade tool to adjust colors and the clarify tool to deal with contrast and definition.

Hello Mish -

Nice capture and the small twigs/branches are not a problem to me. What color do the leaves turn in fall? This almost looks like the locust I have in my backyard. It must be nice to live in and around Eton/Windsor. I was stationed outside of Cambridge in the late 1960's thoroughly enjoyed my stay and it turned me into a lifelong Anglophile. Well done!

Thank you for sharing.

John

Hi Mish,
I'm from England originally and have never seen an English Wood Pigeon.
It is like our New Zealand one in some respects, though not quite as colourful.
Good to see you're using a Panasonic too.
Great cameras aren't they.
Cheers,Steve

Hi Mish,

I like this! The pose of the pigeon is wonderful looking up at the lovely leaves. The colors are beautiful and the details are very good. I love the comp with the diagonal branch.

Hello Mish,
This shot scores on the colour combination and composition. The fact that is also portrays a Woodpigeon in the act of picking some delicacy off the tree with a graceful curve of the neck and that it is also sharp makes this an interesting and attractive post.
TFS,
Regards, Ivan
