The Great Tit (Parus major) is one of the largest tits in England. It took me a while to find what would attract them to my third floor window box feeder. Then again, maybe they just followed the Blue Tits and Robins... all three have appeared at the same time jostling for space.

The Great Tit, Parus major, is a passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. It is a widespread and common species throughout Europe and Asia in any sort of woodland. It is resident, and most birds do not migrate.
It is an easy tit to recognise, large in size at 14 cm, with a broad black line (broader in the male) down its otherwise yellow front. The neck and head are black with white cheeks and ear coverts. Upperparts are olive. It has a white wingbar and outer tail feathers. In young birds the black is replaced by brown, and the white by yellow.
Any hole will do for a nest, and it will readily take to nest boxes. The number in the clutch is often very large, but seven or eight white eggs, spotted red, are normal, with bigger clutches being laid by two or even more hens. The bird is a close sitter, hissing when disturbed.
Great Tits are primarily insectivores. They prefer protein rich caterpillars during breeding season to feed their young. A study published in 2007 found that Great Tits helped to reduce caterpillar damage in apple orchards by 50%.

Apparently they also, like the Blue Tit, open the foil tops of milk bottles to help themselves.
It was a cloudy morning when I took this photo. The sun had not yet cleared the top of the building so the light is being reflected off a white wall of the building next door. Unfortunately the bird has it's back to the light so the black parts of the face and throat show no detail. |

Very nice great tit capture.Details,POV,catchlight in eyes and BG are wonderful.It's a great capture in spite
of negative light conditions.

Hi Mish,
this is a nice little shot of what can be a jittery little bird.
I'm guessing this is either well cropped or sharpened.
It's well composed.

Nice bright colour, but personally I'd prefer a little more at the bottom, and less empty space at the top, also less noise would help.

i guess it is really cool to have a bird feeder in front of the window. i had once at
work 2 years ago, which attracted blue and great tits and distracted me from working.*g*
anyway, nice colorful shot, and so close.
i hope you will keep on trying and show us the results.
