[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
One of those 'right place - right time' photographs.
The main reserve at Leighton Moss was frozen over and the Water Rails, usually very secretive birds, were foraging in a very small stream of running water. The stream was sheltered by shrubs and this kept the frost off. It was early morning and I followed a bird watcher/photographer down the track. He walked right past this little pool and when I got there, an unbelievable five Water Rails were in it. The pool is some 4 yards long x 2 yards wide and 3 yards off the track. They walked up under the shrubs and disappeared so I set my tripod up next to the track and waited. After about half an hour this bird appeared and started searching the bottom for crustaceans and I managed several photo's as the low sun was peeping through a small gap in the foliage. I like it and hope you do.
Camera and settings:- Canon D60 camera, ISO 400, Pattern metering, AV, 600mm focal length, Remote shutter cord.

Nice pose and low POV, though very noisy in the dark areas and way too much Photoshop repair work done in the background leaving straight edges where you have pasted the same patch in several times. Better to clone using a soft brush and avoid the straight edges, and trying to avoid leaving the same feature in more then once.

Difficult to get these ones: and the result is just perfect. Background looks a bit colourfull, but the Rail is just perfect

Hi Peter, this is amazing shot! The reflection is wonderful. The Water Rail is well focused and nice and clean showing lovely detail on the plumage. Nice and sharp with good reflection in the eye. Colours and tones are also v good. Perfect POV and good DOF. It all makes a great compositon.
