Emperor Dragonfly
Anax imperator

The largest of the county's dragonflies, a powerful insect, wary and difficult to approach. It is most usually seen on territory, hunting over a waterbody, swooping and darting with amazing speed and agility. In flight the male appears a striking turquoise blue, the female a dullish green, but the absence of spots on the abdomen separates them from the other hawker types. At rest a dark line can be seen running down the middle of the abdomen.

Favoured habitats include big ponds, gravel pits, canals and slow flowing rivers with abundant marginal vegetation. The flight period is from early June to late August. On several occasions continental specimens are thought to have bred at Gibraltar Point - the females being coloured blue as the in the male forms.

It is never particularly numerous where it is found due to its very territorial behaviour. It is found predominantly in the south-east of the county, and very much towards the northern limit of its national distribution, few records occurring north of the Humber / Dee line.

Hello Joey,
Fine capture of what looks like a female Emperor Dragonfly. This is sharp and well-composed but there probably a little too much green saturation. However that may be due to the very limited available light. With that in mind, you did a good job.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Preciosa joey.El fondo me gusta mucho.La nitidez es muy buena.

Hi Joey,

lovely pin sharp details and an interesting pose. The colours seem a bit unreal to me and maybe a bit over saturated, but still a fine shot nonetheless! Good work,

Paul

Joey, Lovely man lovely. The color of the leaf and the color of the dragon fly is absolutely marvellous. The lighting composition is very good. This is called joey shot. Ganesh

Your dragonfly pics are getting better and better. Example me yesterday walking for exercise, camera in hand...and voila I saw a dragonfly. I thought..I am going to finally get a picture....but the dragonfly eluded me Iguess I am not a "dragonfly whisperer".

I really like the semi camouflage which I'll bet was not done for only one, but just coincidence which makes this shot so good. It helps to point out the black in the wings.

And pro! I can see the whole tail, so nicely composed. I suppose you were thinking that after yesterdays picture. Very sharp.

Joey, you outdid yourself!

Not only is this a splendid dragonfly capture, but it is of a subject quite rare captured resting. For example, i chased one (a male) today for more than 25 minutes and eventually gave up because he was flying non-stop and always very fast. I couldn't even get a single shot.
Anywau, you took advantage of this situation 110% and managed to take such a great shot!
The focus here is impeccable and, together with the DOF, makes such a wonderful composition.
The BG here is a bliss and it really gives and extra color to the entire scene.
The details are terrific - especially on the body and head - and the exposure is spot-on.
Truely splendid work!

Bravo and TFS
