Red Squirrels (Sciurus Vulgaris)

There are only 2 breeds of squirrel in Britain, Reds & Greys.
Red squirrels are the native species of Britain & are endangered.They have tufts on their ears & are smaller than the greys.
Grey squirrels are very common and can be seen in urban areas, such as parks. They were introduced into Britain, from the U.S.A between 1876 & 1929 and Grey squirrels have generally been blamed for the decline of the reds.
Coat colour in Red squirrels is highly variable and can range from black to a dull yellowy-brown (often referred to as “buff”), covering most shades of red and brown in between. Albino Reds are rare, while melanistic (black) Reds are common in some regions (such as Denmark and parts of continental Europe), but rare in the UK.

This one was seen feeding on a wild bird feeding site deep within the forest. Taken at the long end of my 80-400mm lens with iso set at 800. Very slight crop, and colours adjusted using levels.

Hi Gary,
classic Squirrel pose and lovely colurs, look at those feet! We have a colony of Reds on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour, but they're very hard to spot, let alone shoot. Just over a week until i'm at Glenmore myself :o)

Hi Gary.
Wonderful shot of him having a snack, look at those paws. Love the composition, really shows the size of his feet and behavior. Colour and detail are great, slight softness to the image but a sharpen should make that pop.

I am SO jealous!!! I have only seen a red suirrel in the UK once - and that was on Arran, when one ran across the road. The pose is brilliant and the colours very good. Could do with a slight sharpen - but if I had got this shot I would be so happy!

Hello Gary,
I love squirrels, I don't know why , but I set them just after the cats, of whom I'm crazy for.
So it is sad to aknowledge their destiny, & I hope that something could be done. Wolves in Italy were in the same situation, but now they are protected and increasing. I hope a similar future is open to red squirrels.
Your shot is wonderful, well focused and sharp, and a POV that is so typical...

What a great close-up of this squirrel. And it IS close up. You caught every part of him nicely as he munches on his nut. Love the pose! Nice colors and details. Looks like he needs his toenails clipped.

At ISO 800, you have got the Squirrel's features and colours very well, Gary.
I count 10 whiskers on the left and nine on the right :-).
The eyes are beautifully captured.

Ahh Cyril the Squirrel enjoying his booty. Nice close up, head on shot, he is a very hansome chap. Nice focus and good detail and sharpness throughout, lovely eyes and good colour tones.
