[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Following on from last year's "Define a Weed" and "3 spiders and a midge", I decided to slip out and try to get a picture of the Common Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) that grows wild in my garden. (See here for the albino I posted back last summer Albino Common Spotted Orchid.) Mine grows against a shed gate, so for several months of the year we can't get into the shed, but we don't mind too much...

Shortly after taking last year's photo "3 spiders and a midge" the orchid flower spike was lost to the (wild)rabbits which inhabit our rather wild garden. Anyone who thinks 'bunnies' are sweet should try living with my lot. They frequently destroy most things they can lay their teeth into (including my car)... and growing anything in the garden at all requires it all to be inside rabbit proof fencing. So this year we have a protective 'box' around the orchid plant and it has meant that it has actually managed to flower completely this year.

Right... this is a count the insects time. there are 5 insects not including the moth which are living on the orchid flower.

Can you find them? - some are not easy given the 200Kb size limit, so I have uploaded them into a WS.

Taken in RAW (with the macro lens for Niek!), converted to jpeg, resized and sharpened. This is full frame. The flower spike is about 20-25cm tall...

PS this is also the 100th shot from my home that I have uploaded!

PPS - insects 4 & 5 will have to wait until tomorrow! can only upload 2 WS's a day - forgot about that limit!

Hello Emma,
What a superb specimen of the Common Spotted Orchid with a nice bright visitor as well! Very sharp details of the flowers and lovely natural colours. I like the dark background too. - Congratulations on your 100th shot from home!

Wonderful presentation of this flower with the beautiful moth on it.
Sharpness and exposure are great and the color contrast between the green tones in th BG and the pink, red and nearly black of the moth are most wonderful.
Only thing I would like to have seen differnt is a little less depth of field to soften the BG even more.
I see that you did use an aperture of F9.0 but F5.6 would have done the job fine aswell with both the flower and the moth in sharp focus, but with the BG softer because more out of focus field.
Nevertheless a wonderful image.

What a terrific shot and story :)
So first, i'd like to congratulate you on your 100th home photo.
Secoundly, it's really great to hear that these splendid wild flowers grow in your backyard and you are able to take care of these little jewels.
Thirdly, a big BRAVO for this fine macro shot!
I really like the off-cetered compo and the amount of detals you managed to get even in this small 200kb.
The small insects are also a nice treat and add to the interest of the photo.
Looking forward to seeing the other 2 detailed photos :)

First, what an amazingly large common spottted orchid! The focus and POV are spot-on. You have also handled the exposure very well. I also like the insects. I am nowhere near as skilled with a macro as you are - I remember your celandine postings - you have really got to grips with it.

Its a wonderful photo whit great details and colors. It looks like you are getting the hang of the macro lens and it seems it produces a great quality photo with great details and sharpness. I like the bokeh of this photo a lot. The fact that you got that many insect on the flower and especially the moth is wonderful.

The insect really adds icing to the cake Emma. A wonderful capture. Isn't nature full of life. I was surprised as I pictured a small lifeless looking weed the other day. I think I will post it on Friday. You have given me hope through your pictures and your honesty.
