Meadow Brown
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| Probably Europe's most common butterfly, sometimes occurring in dense colonies. The upper wings are a sooty brown; on the forewing, males have a small orange patch containing an eyespot while, in females, the orange forms a larger band containing one large eyespot. The underside shows a brown hindwing with a paler band and orange and buff forewings with an eyespot. The extent of the markings in both sexes is variable. Occurs across most of Europe including ritain. It favours grassy places from lowlands up to 1500m or so and flies from June to September. The larva feed on grasses. |
