Here's a Puffin portrait complete with sand eels to feed it's puffling (baby puffin). The pufflings remain in burrows and the parents will typically feed them sand eels and sprats. Each pair only has one puffling. When ready the pufflings emerge from their burrows in the dark of night and make their way to the sea. This trip is fraught with danger as it often means a scramble through lesser black backed and herring gull territory whcih can be fatal, the trip may also mean dropping and tumbling down high cliffs. The Pufflings will them swim out to sea to fish and reach maturity. You may notive the sand eels are very small. This is a major concern at the moment for puffins, razorbills and gullimots as the sand eels are getting smaller in number and size. This may be an effect of global warming and/or overfishing (sand eels were fished for oil).

I was lucky enough to find a puffling, I made it's journey easier by pickingit up and transporting it to a slipway where it swam and bobbed out to sea in an ungainly fashion. A very heart warming moment.

I hope you like it.

Hi Paul

A beautiful puffin very well captured and presented. This is National Geographic stuff.

The composition is great with the bird filling most of the 2/3 vertical zone with only its beak invading the right side 1/3 space. The position of the eye is close to the left 1/3 line. The colours are stunning and have a perfect natural look. The details are exceptionally sharp and well defined showing the lovely features of the plumage very well. The soft colours of the BG are perfect making it almost seem to form a halo around the bird's head (I'm not sure if it was due to a cloudy sky or the OOF surface of the ocean – probably the sky). The exposure was absolutely spot-on with a good balance between DOF, shutter speed, and lighting and it managed to capture a lovely little catch light in the eye.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi paul,
Good to see a post from you. : )
I love these puffins, which I have never seen in the flesh.
They seem to be good providers, since they always seem to have a beakful of food!
Your puffin's sitting pose is unusual. He seems to be hanging off the ledge, looking into the far and beyond with a wistful look. Maybe it is his clown eye. Fantastic details, down to the mournful look on the eels.
A simple composition, yet with an exceptional visual and emotional impact.
TFS. ; )

Belle photo et bon appétit a cet oiseau que vous avez pris de fort belle façon je trouve. Grande netteté.Jolies couleurs et beaucoups de détails. Amitiés Thomas

Perfect portrait, very clear and detailed, down to the details of the beak and the tiny almost transparant little eels. The point of view from below together with that clean look makes it seem almost like a statue, so unusual for a bird shot. It really stands out. Excellent!

Hi Paul,
I can tell you right now that even though I have yet to take a photo of a puffin they are easily one of the most lovely and photogenic of all birds there are.I just love the look of these little sea-birds and hope someday to get my own shots of them.Your capture is a beautiful one of this bird with a beak full of of fish and that makes it a joy to behold with my tried eyes.Great detail and focus make this a keeper. The only thing thing I see that could be a bit better is the contrast on the shot. Thanks for showing this wonderful shot. Bob
