[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Probably a pair of Yellow Dungflies (Scatophaga stercoraria) mating on a female catkin of a Salix caprea (Pussy Willow).
I say probably because although the match every photo I can find these flies were all acting as the information about them says. as far as I can tell these preditory insects gather to mate on cow pats /dung were the female will lay her eggs on to provide the maggots with something to eat.
There are 54 species of the genera Scathophagidae in britain they are all classed as dung flies as they utilise various different types of dung left by a range of animals. so as all the willows with catkins on had a fair few of these on them so it was no odd pair here who got carried away with the moment, any ideas on an alternative or do we have a new habit to report?

WOW! A great composition. The color is excellent, and very sharp detail. A great pose.

Interesting photo Robb.I don't know a lot about the mating habits of flies so I can't really answer your question. It does make for a good shot though.Much more asthetically pleasing than cow dung anyway.
Good work.

Yes It is time for the nature to do that sort of things. Very nice composition, very good details in the shot, I find the shot a little light, but it is not bordering me farther, good job.

I had a look in my book and ours are very similar. Not quite as green but still similar. I am pretty sure they are dungflies though. Interesting action of these small critter Robert. Very well done.
