[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photo was taken just south of Tomintoul from the Gaelic Tom an t-Sabhail (Hillock of the Barn). Where te river runs into the river Aven lies the ‘Soldier Stone’ a standing stone with the date 1690 etched into its surface. This marks the site where a soldier fell after the battle of the Haughs of Cromdale in that same year. This skirmish took place during an early period of Jacobite unrest and it was fought on the other side of the Cromdales near Grantown-on-Spey. Government forces led by Sir Thomas Livingston, surprised and routed 400 clansmen who had been making raids on Strathspey from their strongholds further west. Many of the clansmen fled eastwards over the hills only to collapse later from their wounds.

The Battle of Cromdale, immortalised by the pipe tune and ballad ‘The Haughs of Cromdale’, led to the dispersal of the Jacobite forces and cessation of hostilities for some time. It was 25 years until the next uprising in 1715.

This rout of the Jacobites is also commemorated in a brisk ballad:

“As I came in by Auchindoun

A little wee bit frae the toun

When to the Highlands I was boun

To view the Haughs of Cromdale

I met a man in tartan trews

I speirit him - what was the news?

Quo’ he - the Heiland army rues

That e’er they came to Cromdale”

Hi Niek,

I like the tremendous depth to this image. I am always impressed by what it does to clouds. One always wishes for good, clear weather on vacation but in actuality I often prefer clouds in photos and cooler temps. Exposure and sharpness both are good. I think, though the image looks a tad dark on my monitor.... but we won't go there! I really like the sense of space and the natural color.

Hi Niek,
Good use of the river here, you used the wide angle very well to add some impact to this pleasing scene. Good natural colour and an overall feeling of space. Feels like you could almost walk into this image. A great shot.

A pleasant landscape has been captured, I notice the water level in the stream showing there has been a rainy summer...

Interesting your historical note on this region. (I prefer just to think about the landscape). I like the point of view you have chosen which gives a nice perspective view of the little river. I like the light of cloudy days.

Another picture from you with a great atmosphere ! I love these big dark clouds - I see the same clouds when I look out of my window, but on photos they look better ! :-) As usual, composition and POV are perfect. Wonderful natural colors, and of course it is a beautiful landscape. Very well done !

good composition and DOF. i like the way the river leads you through the photo. its a little dark which gives it quite a sombre mood.

Hello Niek, I have missed this one, what a beauty. I really like the way all the lines in the composition (even the clouds) take our eyes to the patch of dark trees at the end of the brook. Good use of the 10mm and a very good DOF. Thanks !
