[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The cliffs at Boscombe Beach were covered with these fleshy-leaved plants whose roots undoubtedly help to anchor the fragile sandy soil.

My heartfelt thanks to Jose Rodriguez (jmp) for providing me with an ID here.

This Carpobrotus edulis (also known as the Hottentot Fig and the Highway Iceplant) has naturalized itself in the UK. Its dense mat of roots act as a soil stabilizer and the tiny fruits are edible, so it seems like a very "friendly" fellow! However, it is not entirely benign. Because it forms a very dense mat of roots, it can also edge out more native species and lower biodiversity and it appears to increase soil salinity (which is fortunately not a problem alongside the ocean as here).

A longer view is in the WS so you can see how they fill up the cliff-side as well as another PoV that allows you to see the sunny heart of the flower.

Many thanks for looking and for your assistance in this!

I have no idea what they are, but that's a great shot! The colors are rich.
The dof is nice. Good shot!

Hi Silke,
i'm afraid i have no idea either...but i very much like the sharp focus and the way you've arranged them in the frame, the vivid colour is nice too. Were they growing wild? It's just that there's alot of planted flowers alaong the cliffs round there. Were they near the Pier?

Hi Silke,
I've searched the web trying to find the name of this plant, absolutely common here in Spain used to cover full sunny and poor soils. In fact, I have lots of them when I was a child. It needs almost to water and gives hundred of flowers in spring. Probably it's Carpobrotus edulis. We call it "Cuchillito", but the right spanish common name is "Flor de cuchillo".
Your photo shows this plant as it is, with a perfect color reproduction and great details. I'd like to see it from a higher pov to view the center of the flower, that is really beautiful!

Hello Silke,
Fine capture of a flower that originated in S. Africa. It has become naturalised in mild parts of W. Europe including parts of the S. coast of England, where it is known as the Hottentot Fig.
Sharp well coloured image and fine composition.
Thanks for sharing,
Best wishes,
Ivan
