[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My husband made a very expensive mistake at the weekend. With me having been quite ill recently and life not being so good, he has been keeping an eye open for a camera bag that might just work for the camera veruses hiking equipment issue I have and last week he spotted something that might just do. Unable to get anyone to stock it locally or even consider it, we made a very brief excursion in to London to the camera shop close to where he works. It totally exhausted me but on the way back we walked passed a shop that was showing the Canon EOS 40D at a really good price... and I now have a new camera.

I have wanted my first upload on TN with the new camera to be a landscape, but it was not to be. The sunrises for the last 2 days have failed miserably. When I came home from work this afternoon, on the gates where I park my car was this butterfly waiting for life to warm up a touch. I could not resist the opportunity and now have several shots of it.

Having fought hard to work out how to reduce the exposure (-1EV) most of the other settings I have managed to work out without the handbook.

So far, I like it, but it is a lot larger than my 350D, I suddenly feel far more professional (gulp) and 4Gb CF card will only hold around 300 shots!

Anyhow, the picture is of a Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) butterfly, a very common butterfly resting on our gates (hence the rather unfortunate BG). I could not resist the colours and details in the closed wings.

Converted to RAW, I have not touched this picture other than a very small crop (this is almost full frame), resize and sharpen (very lightly).

Health is very dubious at the moment as I think you can guess, so my posting are going to be very erratic, and critiques just a few a day, but I will catch up with you all in the long run, I promise.

Hi Emma,
I got your e-mail and will respond to it a bit later. Sorry to read about the health but good to read that you got your new camera. I am surely not going to be able to get it soon. Still not sure what to by first, new lens or camera.
If this is a photo straight from the camera, than it looks like the camera is producing some top quality photos. The shear amount of details and the richness in the colors in awesome. The lens did its job excellent as well. It looks like the macro course payed off. A perfect DOF.

Hello Emma ! Well that's a great first shot with the 40D ! (I ordered the same but it's not available here yet...:-( ) Great macro, very sharp, lots of details and good subject. Maybe a bit dark but a great image nonetheless ! Congrats on the new toy !

I congratulate Canon 40D Emma. I unfortunately stays still with its own analogues. I became fond the photographic film though my pocket of unfortunately this do not accept. First picture is surely conforming with Your expectations. It is well. Successful lights, good colours and very nice sharpness. Pleases very much to me composition of this picture.

Lucky you two times.....very sharp of course one has to be an idiot not to get a sharp picture from such a wonderful camera, but mostly not edited? Then supreme! You should be excited for the nicer days and good health.

A wonderful toy you've got there, Emma. I hope it motivates you to get feeling better and get out more. I think this is a great first outing. I love the details in this guy. As for the exposure, I sure you'll figure it out as you go along, but it reminds me of my cmera. My D50 metering seems to be a bit off, and this is really a problem with mostly dark shots with bits of light area like this one. In these cases I tend to adjust to a -2.0 compensation.

PS - With stills like this, along with the tripod, I would suggest to use the mirror-lock function and a remote wire when you get down to the very slow shutter speeds.

I am so glad that you got a new 40D!! At least that is a bright spot in an otherwise dreary time in your life. I sure hope things turn around for you soon.

The photo is super... nice detail and sharpness. I played with a 40D for a long while yesterday at a large photo meet. I'm not sure about the lack of auto focus in the live view mode... then again I'm not sure I would use live view. I do like a lot of the features better than the 30D. It is a large camera.
