[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Normall I do not do this, uploading a photo and not giving any critique. But, I've promised myself to go on a Dutch landscape hunt again. It's been a while since I picked up my camera and I really feel the urge to be out there again.

This is another Red Grouse photo taken during our wildlife safari. This one was taken from the car. We just left our previous Grouse spot, and were on our way to another location when I spoted this Grouse sitting by the road. We stopped and I grabed my camera. I had to be quick, since the grouse was running away and I couldn't get the best POV from the backseat window.

I knew that this was a good opportunity to capture a grouse from close distance. But the distance also ment a adjustment in the aperture, otherwise there would be a small focal spot. So F/11 felt good and still gave enough control to handheld the camera and lens. The BG you see here is not the sky, but a mountain in the far distance.

Update to this note. I did go landscape hunting, but the weather was too bad to get a great landscape photo. I've spent more time protecting my camera from the rain than taking photos. Hey, I did get out and did enjoy nature.

Jacob

hello Niek,
This picture tells a whole story. I like the way the Grouse is just looking up behind the vegetation. It was looking for you, and you caught it! Pleasant picture.
Bedst regards
Anne

Hi Niek,
I think it turned out pretty good for a quick grab shot. A difficult exposure, but you handled it very well with the bright backround and darker foreground. Nice colors and good detail in the Grouse.

Scott

bonjour Niek

j'aimes beaucoup ta photo prise en contre-plongé de ce lagopède,
j'aimes également la façon dont le lagopède est cadré dans l'image
j'aimes cette espace qu'il y a vers où il regarde, TFS

It's a pretty cute bird. I think the way he's peeking out makes him even cuter! I like the way he's burried in the grass, too. Good focus on him, too.

Hi Niek

A very characteristic pose of a red grouse. This shot shows the habitat very well.

James

Hello Niek,
A great portrait of this fine bird, a well composed image with fine details!
This is a common bird in my parts too, right now is hunting season...
I like how the birds pops up from the vegetation, where the grouse is so clever in hiding, you can almost step on them before they react!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Niek,
Wonderful shot of the Red Grouse stretching its neck out to look around. Very unusual composition but looks majestic. The FG details and the blue sky gives a fabulous effect. Very sharp image with spot-on focus on its head. Superb lighting and colours. great POV to portray this charming scene and very nicely composed. Kudos.

My sympathies on the landscape hunting, Niek. I am momentarily city-bound again (spent allllll day yesterday taking pictures of the Open House at the airport [a very worthwhile fun event that netted my at least three customers], pictures that will have to be sorted and processed within 48 hours and today I am spending a few hours at the county fair!!) so no new nature shots from me for a few days I think (might resort to archives :()

Great capture here. I love the way the head is just visible, showing how secretive and hard to capture it really is

Niek, Lovely it looks like someone has actually pasted marbles or pellets on this bird. Excellent eye catch and lovely clarity shot. Ganesh

Hi Niek,
sorry to hear about the weather, i had the same problem here today on the south coast..but like you say, it's worth it just to be out there anyway.
Anyway back to your photo. A great composition and loooks like you made the right choice with the f stop. Nice layers of OOF heather in the foreground add some subtle colour too. The Grouse itself is sharp and in focus. Good job.

Hello Niek,
Great opportunistic shot of a Red Grouse, the head and neck showing sharply and well in this fine composition with it in its natural heathy habitat.
If you didn't mention it it would ahve been hard to believe that the BG was mountain. Must ahev had patches of mist on it.
TFS and for your kind words for my recovery.
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Niek.
Wonderful capture. I don't know why but I find it almost humouros. Just the way he's sticking his head up out of the grass, like he's hiding from a hunter or something. Great composition and sharpness. Well seen.
Best regards my friend. Steve.
