Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all having a great weekend! The weather in Lancashire has been fine and warm - very unusual for October!

This morning I am posting the photograph of a caterpillar which I found traversing a wall near my home. It was a particularly 'big boy' and though we have many caterpillar around, this one was new to me! Having checked my books, I believe it to be an 'elephant hawk moth' caterpillar. (I'm happy to be corrected if anyone knows different!)

Here are some interesting facts about this caterpillar:
The elephant hawkmoth gets its name from the appearance of its larva, not because it is big but because it has a long, trunk-like nose.

However, when the larva senses danger it can withdraw its trunk creating a slightly more bulbous head shape; this is when the large eye-like markings on either side of its head can give the impression of a much more imposing creature to scare off potential predators.

Thank you for your visit. I hope you found it useful and please feel free to offer feedback on any aspect of the photograph. :-)

Hello Beverley,
This is a funny little caterpillar that will one day turn into a very beautiful moth! Very fine macro clearly showing its markings. It would be interesting to know on what plant you found it?

Hello my friend,
I must excuse me, I discovered only this evening that you are on TN! I'm really an old sock..., but forget me, this is a period of busy work, planning the activities of the term and all extra-work in the afternoon for students of the last year. I'm very happy to meet you here, I will follow your shots with interest. This one is new for me, is very sharp and the particulars very neat. "What a great eyes you has....".
Sweet dreams,
Violetta

Hello Beverley,
Great details in this little fellow!
Patterns, colours and markings are well visible, so I guess the experts will have no problems with this one...
Well composed presentation, nice macro work!
Greetings,
Pablo -
