Hello,
this is Butter Rock, a limestone sea pillar that sits at the western end of St Oswald Bay. At the other end of the beach behind this spot, about a mile away, is Durdle Door, a well known rock formation that forms an archway into the sea.
In the background here though, you can just make out Bat Hole, a much younger hole in the cliffs that is just beginning it's slow journey towards becoming a natural marvel in it's own right.
I wish i could be around in the distant future to see how it looks after thousands of years of erosion.

I've tried to use Butter Rock to block out the setting sun and create some contrast between light and dark using the shadow it's casting...it's a little bright i think perhaps, but i like the almost Halo like effect it has created around it, so i thought i'd share it with you all.

shot in RAW, redcued highlights a tad, curves, resized and sharpened.

Thanks for looking

Happy 2008!

Hello Paul
This is a fantastic scene and I love the way you have used the rock to control the exposure on the sun..Perfect foresight...a seascape is the hardest thing to take as there are so many elements to consider and you always consider them all so well.
Happy New Year to you Paul and I hope your enjoying your break from work.
ps I done a workshop..its not good but I had a play with all those fantastic elements you capture

Hello Paul,
Well contrast balanced in the using the Butter rock as blockage to have effect on light and shadow in this beautiful coast
the foam in the sand add a lot of perspective in the whole composition!
well done, Paul!
wishing you well
Tony

Hi Paul,
I do feel like being on another planet by looking at this wonderful scenery. Lightning, colors, composition and exposure are wonderful again. This is so agreeable to look at. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Paul, fascinating seascape with great rock, splendid light and wonderful colors, very well done, HAPPY NEW YEAR ciao Silvio

Your colours are always so richly saturated...not over the top, but right near it where the drama unfolds. For some reason this one reminds me of food...something in a orange glaze! With some whipped topping. You have made foam and rock and beach into a dessert!
Bob

Hi Paul,

your shots from beautiful landscapes are great. I like most of them. This one is very pleasant.
The light is very spécial, thanks to the setting sun hidden behind this rock. Good idea.
Thanks for sharing
Regards
Fred

A great idea to blot out the sun with Butter Rock!
Striking contrast caused by the shadows.
Very good composition as well.

Have a Happy New Year!
Cheers mate,

Hello Paul!
Anothe fantastic picture from the "zone between land and sea" :>
I especially like game of light around the rock placed in the sea. By the way, do you know what kind of rocks are on the beach? These are so white!
TFS and all the best!

Hello Paul,
I missed this beauty!
The exposure against the halo of the sun and the perspective are masterly and the composition with the sea-polished limestone outcrops in the sand is excellent. I think this one is one of you best ones of the Dorset coast and I can only admire it!
Thanks and I hope you have a good 2008!
Ivan

hi paul
you have managed to create again a beautiful and well planned shot..
imminent foreground dominates here with the bar of golden sand filling the frame nicely
you certainly have a discreet and sensitive way of using filtration
cheers

Hello Paul

Ok this is amazing. The way the sunlight appears behind the rock, and the splendid colours it produces on the sand. The shadow cast by the rock, makes me feel i am in it's shadow just looking at it.
The clarity is exceptional and the details are wonderful.
Your shots have quality to them that elevates them from the norm.
TFS

Rob

Great shot of Butter Rock Paul, you've chosen a very difficult exposure scenario..
But it turned out well enough, with a pleasing "halo" effect around the focal point of your comp.
Well done,
Howard
