Blackthorn,Prunus spinosa...Stiff thorny bush, growing up to about 4 metres in hight. propagates by "suckering" forming an impenetrable, dense mass of thickets that can only be got through by small fury animals and insane spaniels!!

Flowers are white, 10-15mm across, they appear before the leaves, giving a nice contrast with the black twigs and background. They generally flower a fortnight after Cherry-plum , and a month before Hawthorne...ain't Nature clever!!! Leaves are oval and carry a matt finish...the fruit is the "sloe":- diminutive little blackish plum, and tongue numbingly tart...but goes great with Gin!!! Widespread and common...

This was taken at 0730 am this morning, (BST) I am intending to have a few "experiments" with focal/shutter speeds etc...to see what comes out, this will be a series of 3 images, at different perspectives/zooms and settings..

This was taken "on the tree", Sun at my back, cloudy/overcast...Flash was used, but it is a pretty old one and does not seem to want to go above a shutter speed of 1/320..

All critiques very welcome...good or bad...all are positive if ability improves.

This image was just cropped/sized. No PP work whatever.

ISO 100
Shutter 1/320
F-f/7.8

Flash used, tripod and remote shutter used, mirror locked.

Hello Howard, a fine shot of the blackthorn flower. V. good crisp detail w/ good dof and nice contrasting dark bg w/ the light textures of the petals. Good sharp definition in the water droplets. Overall a very nice quality photo. tfs Rgds Necip

Hi Howard, superb close up of the Blackthorn......wonderful focus and composition friend! TFS.
Cheers,

Wonderful shot of this lesser known Prunus species Howard. I'm not familiar with it myself although I have heard of Sloe gin. I've had Damson gin a few times and I guess it is something similar.
A nice clear image, with good exposure on the whites.
Good work.
Steve

The tiny water drops make it a keeper..something always works, except some sports, with water and images...well I take back the sports part too..sometimes even it makes sports...like the snowed out opening day in Cleveland for the Indians...couple years ago..Nice image Howard...TFS etc; Etal;

Hello Howard,
The water droplets add to an already fine image. The details, depth of field and exposure are great in this nice composition. Thanks Howard for sharing this excellent posting.

Hello Howard

I really like the droplets of water on the petals.
I can't wait for Spring to get here, the blossoms in May can be so beautiful.
This is well seen, with an excellent POV,your flower images are very beautiful.
Lovely contrast between the flower and dark BG.
TFS

An excellent image. Brighteness, contrast and tonal range are very good in this picture.

I see a lot of macro floral images in your submissions. Many of my own similar pictures taken in Arizona and the Pacific Northwest of the USA can be found starting from here:
