This one is dedicated to Zeno for his invaluable contribution to TrekNature and the fabulous Eagle Owl shot he posted yesterday! :-)

This was taken at the Raptor-in-the-Forest Photoday on Saturday.

I hope you like it!

The Rock Eagle Owl also called the Indian Eagle Owl or Bengal Eagle Owl, Bubo bengalensis is a species of large horned owl found in South Asia. They are found in hilly and rocky scrub forests, and are usually seen in pairs. They have a deep resonant booming call that may be heard at dawn and dusk. They are typically large owls, and have "tufts" on their heads. They are splashed with brown, and gray and have a white throat patch with black small stripes.

They are seen in shrub deserts, evergreen forests, but are more prone to rocky places. Humid evergreen forest and pure deserts are avoided. So are heavy forests. Bush covered rocky hillocks and ravines, and steep outscoured banks of rivers and streams are favourite haunts. It spends the day under the shelter of a bush or rocky projection, or in an ancient mango or similar thickly foilaged tree near villages. Their diet consists of mice and any small rodents and mammals, and sometimes birds.

The nesting season is November to April. The eggs number three to four and are creamy white, broad roundish ovals with a smooth texture. They are laid on bare soil in a natural recess in an earth bank, on the ledge of a cliff, or under the shelter of a bush on level ground.

Thanks for viewing :-)

Wow!! I know just how dark and gloomy it was in there when this was taken, and if you look at the sky reflected in the Owl's eyes you can get some idea. Quality is amazing, especially under the circumstances. This image is an absolute credit to you and your ability Joe, well done.

An absolutely wonderful shot...razor sharp....congratulations

Hi Joe

Sorry i haven't had any time for TN recently :( and i only found a small break today to attend to some of the superb posts i missed lately...

First thing's first: big congrats for you new lens! You did great to move fast and get it from Francine as i see some other folks were asking about it :) It really is a terrific one and i'm sure the long zoom stabilized will bring a lot awesome shot to your portfolio ;)

I also took a nice look over your recent shots (i really loved the barn owl one, too) but i'm afraid that time only allows me to write about one. I just wanted you to know that i think you did a great work at them too.

So now to this impeccable portrait...what a fantastic eye-contact and close-up on this eagle owl's face!!!
The details are simply outstanding and the DOF you chose is spot-on. It also allowed you that charming BG - which complement the subject's texture and colors so nicely.
The nice and even light on the owl is also lovely and besides that obvious great saturation that it brings it also gives nice shadows here and there (but not some of those harsh one...just impressions of less light that make this portrait even better).
Your POV was clearly great, too - since it gave you this look from the owl (together with the good timing of course) and it completes this absolutely pro portrait!

BRAVOOO, TFS and TFS
Horia

Hi Joe!

You present us a fascinating, crystal clear and impressive close up. From my personal point of view, it's simply perfect, as well technically as concerning the expression.

Congratulations!

"Stunning" is the only word that comes to mind after looking at this extraordinary capture of an Owl's face, Joe.
What a professional nature photographer you have turned into, to my immense pleasure!

Ya know Joey...You're much better at photographing close-in's of birds than I am at NASCAR driving...I know..I know I am good at it and all but this is your forte' my friend..I say portions of the prior with tongue in cheek humour of course...which is my way...someone has to be manic once in a while eh?

Hi Joe,

I am looking right into his eyes and he is staring back at me! There cannot be a better owl portrait than this. All is perfect. I love it!!

Jane

Hi Joy,
a nice portrait of this beautiful Owl.
Very good sharpness with great details and very good DOF,
it's sharp from the beak back to the ears, it's amazing you got that with F5.6,
maybe you didn't use the full length of the lens. The eyes look great both in sharpness and colours.
Very well done.

Once again: outstanding!
Congrats, Joe.
No critiques whatsoever...

Hi Joe

One of your best - the eyes, especially, are beautiful, Good colour and exposure throughout.

A fine portrait Joe, from an effective POV, demonstrating the symmetry of the face with a perfect focus and excellent plumage and coloration details. The huge eyes and the sharp beak designate a strong predator. A good take my friend.

Your technical skills, Joey, are to the professional level but there is one thing you have that you won't find in any school, it's the gift of sensitivity, the sense of beauty and humility. You let the subject fill the space in front of your lens and you capture it. Once more, congratulations, it is such a beautiful picture.

Hello Joey,
Splendid this owl portrait. And what a sharpness, you must have an excellent lens. If we look too long at the eyes, I suppose we will get hynotized. Great shot. Thanks a lot for it.
