I believe this bird to be a Chiff Chaff..I have looked through all my bird books and I think I am correct in my ID...There are only 2 other post of chiff chaffs on TN that I can find to help confirm the ID as well.

I spotted the bird in the large woodland hedge at the bottom of my garden..It had a very erratic flight almost like a butterfly as it was feeding on insects on the branches and the air.
At first I thought it was a female Chaffinch but it was clear it wasnt as it is about the size of a Blue Tit.

Phylloscopus collybita

A small olive-brown warbler which actively flits through trees and shrubs, with a distinctive tail-wagging movement. Less bright than the similar willow warbler and readily distinguished by its song, from where it gets its name. Picks insects from trees and also flies out to snap them up in flight.
Chiffchaffs can be found across the UK, Eurasia and parts of Africa.

The picture is not of the best quality as I had to change lenses, walk the dog, prepare dinner etc before I got the chance for a shot of this active little bird!!

Thanks for Looking

Hi Paul

Lovely shot - good composition - the crossed twigs focus the viewers attention on the bird's head. Good colour and the detail is good. Well observed and captured.

James

Let's hope the weather is good for tomorrow - it is bitterly cold here now! (The main hide is heated though).

Hi Paul,

I love these little Warblers - would love them more if they stopped flitting around so much and posed. You caught him in a great pose and in a perfect position on the branch. Nice warm colors and good details. The face is the same as the Warblers we have here - just the colors are different.

Hello Paul I like the POV and pose you caught. The 1/250 sec tells me you shot this in dull light, Sigh! cant wait for some good weather, but I suppose I will then complain the new leaves obscure the birds, tfs rgds Necip.

The more active they are, the more they require from us patience and knowledge! Sometime, luck is enough but most of the time it isn't. This bird looks like a "roitelet" (kinglet?) but in bigger and if it moves as fast, you are a lot more patient than I am! Thanks for your nice notes, nice picture which is natural, with lovely colours and spot on exposure. Thank you Paul!
