I have spent a fair amount of time lately experimenting with small birds inflight..I have to say that I think that this is one of the best of them..I have been trying out different approaches and have had the benefit of a little sunlight as well today.

Female Chaffinch
The Chaffinch is our commonest finch and has striking double white wing bars. The wing bars are formed by white patches on the wing coverts, and primary and secondary wing feathers. Its summer plumage is brighter that its winter plumage.

The male Chaffinch has a pink breast and cheeks, blue-grey crown and nape, and chestnut brown back. In summer, its bill is grey-blue, turning to pale brown in the winter.

The female has an olive-brown back, and grey-brown underparts becoming almost white towards the rump, which is greenish. The juveniles are similar to the female but lack the greenish rump. The bill is brown in both the female and juveniles.

The Brambling is similar but has white rump and all-black tail, the Chaffinch has white outer tail feathers in both sexes. They often form mixed flocks in the winter; the Brambling's white rump and Chaffinch's white wing bars are diagnostic features.

Being our commonest finch it is sometimes easy to overlook its beauty despite the male possibly having more colours in its plumage than any other British bird.
The Chaffinches build a neat cup nest from moss, grass, and feathers bound with spiders' webs, lined with feathers and wool, and decorated with lichen and flakes of bark. The nest is usually in a fork of a tree or shrub.

The eggs of the Chaffinch are about 20 mm by 15 mm in size, and are smooth, glossy, and light blue with purple-brown blotches. The duties of incubating the eggs are performed by the female. The newly-hatched young are fed by both adults.

Thanks for looking and my apologies for being a bit behind with returning crits..Im on it now!

You've caught this chaffinch at the beginning of a downstroke in mid-air Paul, the motion freezing exposure and fine focusing enabled you to display the plumage and the feathers of the wing and tail to a perfection. Good work indeed!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Paul hello!
Elegant! The details of the wing and the overall composition is perfect. Looks like made of cyristal. Great job! Congratulations.

Paul well done! this is superb the flight pose is spot on, great use of flash and well adjusted tfs rgds Necip

I think the only way you could get all not in motion would be to shoot at 1/500th or better and then with a strong flash and pin sharp aperture setting...but you are right...this is one of the, if not the best ones..

Hello Paul,
Nicely captured image. Great detail and exposure, plenty of wing blur even at 1/1250. Crop-wise I might have left a little more to the right and perhaps on the bottom, minor point though. These smaller birds are hard to capture in-flight (I've never tried but I've spent plenty of time watching them and trying to figure out how I'd do it :-)). Nice work.

Adrian

Beautiful in flight capture with lovely feather details and pose of the bird.

Seems like the bird has a bad left leg.

Hi Paul

Yes, indeed....very long time... :)
I'm afraid that spare time came in very short amounts for me lately :( But i guess we all have periods like this...

Anyway, nice to browse through your gallery again, my friend and see you are getting better and better with these beautiful in-flights!
This one here is indeed a gem and definitely one of your best until now!
I love the sharpness you managed to get on the body of this nice Chaffinch as well as the excellent light on the entire body and wings.
Very beautiful pose and presentation!

Bravo, TFS and take care!

Hi Paul,

I agree - this is one of your best. You caught him in a wonderful pose - the wings are magnificent. Beautiful colors and details of the Chaffinch. A fantastic shot.

Jane

wow, paul, i really like your "experiment"! :-) this is awesome, perfectly caught inflight-action.
excellent sharpness on the body with a slight motion-blur on the wings giving us an idea how fast she flew.
the fill flash is great, giving enough light on the bird and leaving the blurred bg in a very nice dark green.
terrific job & best wishes, thor.

You are a master of in-flights, Paul!
This female Chaffinch is beautifully and sharply captured with just the right wing position and the use of fash highlights it well.
I think this is great and take to my favorites.
Thanks for sharing it!

Woooweee, Paul!! What a fantastic flying shot of this Chaffinch!! You've really excelled at this kind of photography!
Very cool pose with the wing outstretched and a great dynamic composition.
Excellent sharpness and clarity.
Stunningly good focusing too!
Must have taken a lot of hard work and time to get this!
I must try and find the money to get a flashgun... I'm still paying off my lenses and will be doing so until next year! :-( May get a flash for my b'day though :-)

I tip my hat to you!
Very, very well done,

You successfully managed to get those birds flying! Superb shot, Paul, I love the graceful movement of the wing with the light flattering it. Did you notice the way it holds its little fingers, it seems to be landing. Great capture, with great light and sharpness, thank you! I am back today as the little puppy is asleep beside me and Love is playing guitar. The sun is out, the snow hasn't melted yet but it shall... bye bye!

Hi Paul,
so i guess this almost represents a culmination of all your hard work so far...and very impressive it is too mate. The detail and focus on the body, claws and head are bang on, with enough blur left in the wings to keep the sense of movement. Impressive capture which shows what determination and skill can produce, well done.
Paul

Hi Paul
This is a wonderful capture of the chaffinch in flight. THe pattern on the wings and the feeling of motion are very impressive. The bird is in excellent focus and perfectly caught. well done!

Fantastic, you definately need help from sun light for better exposure with such a high shutter speed. Great work.
