Jay, Garrulus Glandarius.
I spotted this Jay whilst on a bike ride through Elveden forest. Even though they are colourful, you usually hear them before you see them, they are quite noisy, like the magpies they are closely related to. This one was looking for nesting material, I have a later shot of it with several small twigs in it's mouth. I followed it for a couple of minutes before it flew off. I captured it taking off from a branch but the shot was sorely out of focus. Maybe one for the 'just missed' theme...?

Status -
Widespread resident throughout most of Britain, with numbers increased during periodic invasions of Continental birds
Habitat -
Woodland, especially where oaks are present, but also large parks in urban areas.
Description -
Colourful and distinctive when seen well. Often, due to it's shy and wary nature, all that is seen is the white rump and black tail as it flies away in characteristic bouncy fashion. Calls harsh and loud.

34 cm
Trivia -
Did you know that the jay 'is one of the most important natural planters of acorns... and the distribution of several oak species is quite dependent on its presence'?

This really is a great photo! Very nice colors and it's also crisp and clear. Good details. Composition is also very strong in this picture. I like the fact he has a thin stick in his beak. Well done & TFS!

Great shot Andy!
Jays are one of my favourite birds. They are very inteligent and really full of surprises. Did you know that they can make sounds like cat or rooster during their mating song?
The photo is really good. Pose of the bird is great, POV superb and the colours very good.
I like it very much.
