[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Herb Robert, geranium robertianum. member of the Cranesbill family.

This particular member is a spreading plant,up to 50cm tall, hairy stems and leaves and also carries an unpleasant smell.

The leaves are stalked, opposite and carry 3-5 lobes. These lobes are deeply separated. The flowers are usually in pairs, short stalked and carry hairs, both glandular and non-glandular hairs. The flower is about 9-12 mm across. The anthers are orange, and also carry bright yellow pollen at the ends. The flowering season is May to December, quite a long season. They are found in habitats as diverse as Woods, scrub land clearings and will grow in cracks in walls.

This one was taken in the dark with full flash (I intended taking this one earlier, but got stuck with more than one pint of fine British Ale after a day at the golf course) and I have to admit to having had a bit of trouble both with setting up the camera and focussing, please accept my humblest apologies for this, but it had been a glorious day....

ISO 100
shutter speed 1/320
f-stop f/36

Manual focus, mirror lock and remote shutter used.Shot in RAW, no PP work done apart from cropping and sizing.

Full flash was also used as this one was taken at about 9pm BST.

Hi Howard

A great macro - combining excellent colour and superb detail. Well observed and captured.

James

super saturation so perfect in the 100 ISO! It did something electronically to make magic for you Howard. Tres cool. I see a somewhat darker than violet in feeling...as though there is a mystic...or mystique to the image...what comes next? Only dreams shall tell.

Hi Howard

Even though the Ale might have given you a bit of hassles during the set up stage, fortunately the tripod, the mirror lock, & the remote release ensured a perfectly still image (chuckle). Is this why thy call it a "Still life" image?

It is such a small flower that most people would probably miss it or not even be bothered about it when walking past it. You did great with the amazing f/36 aperture and 1/320 shutter speed and probably pushed your flash and 350D to its very limit. This combination brought a crystal like texture out of the surface of the petals which gave this shot excellent visual impact. The wide zone of the DOF obviously ensured perfect details on the lovely little flower. The rich colours are splendid and the dark BG makes the flower stand out beautifully in the image.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
