Large Red Damselfly
Latin name: Pyrrhosoma nymphula
Size: Wingspan approximately 50mms.
Distribution: Found throughout the UK.
Months seen: May to September.
Habitat: Seen close to ponds, streams and rivers.
Food: Insects.
Special features: This is one of our commonest damselflies, and often one of the earliest to be seen in each year.
Both the male and female have a red abdomen with black markings. The thorax is black with red stripes, and the legs are black. |
