Me and my Dad drove to the New Forest yesterday to have a go at shooting some Nuthatch and other small birds at a hot-spot for them. We met up with Nick Glen by chance and he put some seeds out for them. Well, we saw absolutely nothing! :-( Still an enjoyable day though :-) Later on Nick went home and me and my Dad found a campsite to stay in overnight. I had a rough night with no pillow (spare clothes were used as a substitute) thousands of lumps sticking into my back from the stick-covered ground and the wind and rain battering the tent! All in all I got about 3 hours sleep! The next day we met up with Nick again and also Paul Burford (Lawbert), Paul Haynes (Paulh), Jai Glen (jai glenny) and Horia. First we walked along a stretch of the river Stour where there were millions of Demoiselles and Scarce Chasers and then went off to Blashford Lakes for some bird photography. I got this shot of a Great-Spotted Woodpecker there from a hide. I also saw my first Nuthatch! :-) Later we went off to the hot-spot for small birds again to see if we could get any photos of them but once again it was barren! We think I must have jinxed it or something :-) Then we went to another lake where we got some dragonfly shots.

A really enjoyable weekend overall :-D

This one is dedicated to my Dad for driving me everywhere and being a very patient "chauffeur" for all my kit :-)

I know it's not the best shot but it's my first anywhere-near-decent shot of this bird so I thought I'd post it :-)

I hope you like it!

Hi Joe. Glad to see you got home safe. A nice dedication to your dad for giving up the weekend for you. You did well with this woodpecker looking through the glass. Good detail and colours. TFS. I had a great time thanks.
Nick..

Hi Joe,

Very good capture of Great Spotted Woodpecker. Nice pose and composition, nice colours and sharp details.

Welcome to the world of camping, I did my 11 months of National Service (in Finland) where you learn to enjoy outdoors;o). After some practice you can sleep anywhere.

TFS

Best wishes

Pekka

Hi Joe,
Thanx for posting this "near decent" shot :)
I enjoyed the note describing the day, sounds like ya had to "rough" it a bit...

I cannot tell you how envious of you...look at my last video...I am the tall skinny kid with glasses and about 15-16 years old in it...paddling down the river in my canoe with my father...Your trip and image reminds me so much of my days as a "kid"....I was as crazy back then as I am now:-) You do have to suffer through my tedious words which I was responsible to writing for my father in his passing..I still find it hard to think that I, at only age 63 , am somehow the elder of this massive family...I am not close to what my parents were! I try hard to catch up on my nature through TN and believe it or not...someone as you...who was just that age....we are all teachers...we are all learning as well!
Bob

Joe,

That's an excellent dedication. It is good to see you can spend quality time with your dad. Good for you guys.
Don't worry about the quality of this image. It is your first and that's what counts. With your skill and dedication to photography I am sure we'll see a better image soon. Great work. (BTW, this one ain't that bad at all) TFS

Best Regards,

Martin

Hi Joe,
Sounds like a fun weekend, sorry you didn't have very good luck. This is a nice image of a species new to me, the colors and details are great. Thanks for sharing Sir.

Aw Joey, this is a very good wood pecker photo! I have only gotton one woodpecker photo, and it was'nt nearly as in good focus... Thanks Joey for sharing! Cheers Josh Lewis.

Hi Joseph,
Very peppy Woodpecker, going by its alert expression.
The POV offers a fine view of the subject you displayed in portrait orientation.
BTW, what is the vertical column on which the bird is perched? Doesn't look like a tree.
Well done and TFS.
