Hi David
A good shot, especially considering you had the moth in one hand and the camera in the other! Good DOF considering how close you are. Slight pity the wing is a little shadowed so some of that vibrant red is not standing out at well as it could. I use Aperture for tweaking my images, and there is a really cool slider to bring up detail on shadowed areas - it can transform certain mediocre shots into ones to be pleased with.
The caterpillars of this moth feed on Ragwort species - as this plant can be a serious threat if grazed by horses and cattle they should be encouraged. They are striped black and yellow, and I once heard a lovely colloquial description of them as 'maggots with rugby shirts on'!
Regards
Vinny
