Hello Everyone,

well it appears i've reached another milestone on TrekNature - this is my 300th posting. Hard to believe that about 2 and a half years ago i nervously posted my first shot here, in total awe of what i saw being captured and then shared by other people from around the world.
Well nothing's changed in that respect, i'm still blown away daily by the imagery that we all get to see from the talented members here.
The extremely high bar set at TN has been and still is a powerfull incentive to improve my photography, and everything i have learnt about this absorbing hobby has been from you guys.
I've also learnt so much more about the world and the things that live in it and see things in way i never did before. I've also made and even met some very good friends.

So thanks to you all, i hope that i can carry on being inspired and continue learning from this unique community.

The Photo:

Taken at a recent visit to a Red Kite Conservation centre at Gigrin Farm, Mid Wales. These guys get fed everyday at 3pm prompt, and for about half an hour before hand they arrive enmasse from out in the surrounding hills, circling and gathering until the farmer comes out with a trailer of fresh meat, which he dumps on the grass in a field.
What follows is a chaotic free for all as Buzzards, Kestrals and even Crows all compete with the Red Kites for this free lunch.
When we visited, there was around 70 or so Kites in all. It was great to watch, but extremely hard to get a decent clear shot of these fast moving birds!

Red Kite numbers are starting to recover well in the UK, thankfully, despite numbers dropping dangerously low.

A little bit about their troubled past here from the Red Kite website:

Persecution meant that the bird was exterminated in England, Scotland and most of Wales by the end of the last century. The 16th Century saw a series of Vermin Acts, requiring 'vermin' including the Red Kite to be killed throughout the parishes of Wales and England -the bird was perceived as a threat to expanding agriculture.

Such persecution continued throughout the 17th and 18th Centuries, and at the end of the 18th Century another devastating blow happened when increasing numbers of gamekeepers were employed on country estates, set up after the initiation of the parliamentary enclosures. These men were responsible for killing far more Red Kites.
By the late 18th Century, Red Kites had bred for the last time in England; the story in Scotland was similar.

Only in rural Mid Wales did Red Kites hang on, their numbers down to just a few pairs. At that point a few local landowners had the foresight to set up an unofficial protection programme to try to safeguard this beautiful bird. Over a period of around 100 years, efforts to maintain a fragile breeding population were made by committed generations of landowners, rural communities, dedicated individuals and organisations.
Thanks to the dedication of individuals and organisatons, and despite severe threats from egg collectors, poisoning and some modern farming practices, Red Kite numbers are now gradually increasing.

How close did the Red Kite get to extinction? It's hard to give exact figures, but from scientific research at Nottingham University we do know that the entire population of kites in 1977 emanated from just one female bird.
Today Red Kites have a limited geographical range, which, with the exception of small and isolated populations in NW Africa and West Transcaucasia, is entirely confined to Europe. Total world population estimated at around 20,000 - 23,000 breeding pairs with main centres of population in Germany, Spain and France.
In recent years young red kites have been taken from nests on the continent and introduced into England and Scotland. Wales now has around 600 breeding pairs.

Red Kites have been targeted by egg thieves - collectors will risk very heavy fines (over £ 1,000) to obtain them. This selfish activity is part of the reason why it took so long for the population to re-establish itself and start expanding again in Wales.

Illegal use of poisoned baits, not set specifically for Red Kites, has been and continues to be another major threat to the bird.

Hello Paul,
Congratulations on two counts: firstly that you post your 300th and secondly that you have more than succeeded in fulfilling your aim to shoot a Red Kite. This is a superb capture of a light-coloured individual taken from a classic POV with fine sharpness and set in an excellent composition against the blue sky of Wales.
TFS this wonderful image and I hope you continue to be on TN for a long time to come!

Hello Paul,
Congratulations on reaching 300 and thanks for all the wonderful captures of excellent quality you've shown us so far! And today you're showing us a brilliant capture of the Red Kite, a bird of prey so common here but as you say really hard to capture. The colours and sharp details look lovely against the blue sky. Well done!

Hi Paul

Congratulations!

A beautiful shot - Lovely pose and excellent detail. I love the light shining through the wings. Excellent work.

This posting reminds me I have to pay a visit to the Red Kite site in Northamptonshire - I left it too late last year. We sometimes get them round here too.

These birds fly with such freedom and grace, it's unbelievable to read their past history... and the killing of those fantastic birds. Thank you for the interesting notes, I read it with interest and curiosity.... imagining the lives and chores of those ancient times and the mentality to kill "vermin". I am very happy that things SLOWLY change and that consciousness starts spreading around in people's mind. This picture is amazing, it looks like a painting and we perfectly see the colours of each feather. Thank you once more Paul,

Francine

PS Congratulations for your 300th post... TN is a fantastic place as you say and we learn from each other so much. And as far as I am concerned, you're among the fabulous photographers on this site to share pictures and contribute to this wonderful site. You are right, I'm amazed each day at everything that I find here and I wish I'd have the time and the cookies to distribute!

Hallo Paul
Congratulations with your 300th post. A most suitable image for the occasion. Another technique I would like to accomplish one day. I admire the photographers that are able to take a successful bird in flight photo. Absolutely stunning! This Red Kite's feathers looks as if they are woven. The detail is remarkable. The clear blue sky is a lovely background for this dark coloured bird. It is a majestic bird with massive and impressive feathers. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Paul

Congratulations on this superb landmark you reached! 300 is indeed impressive!
A bold idea to go with a wildlife shot for such an occasion, when everybody here knows you for your superb landscapes...i like it :) Sometimes some risks are worth taking ;)

This is a superb shot and, from reading your notes, it looks like you had quite a day there. I'm glad to hear that.
The details are exceptional (implicitly i'm comparing this with my lame attempts for such shots with the same lens) and the colors are also wonderful. I'm a bit amazing you didn't take your big Sigma to this place but it's probably easier and lighter with this one :)
Anyway, very nice work, mate!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: did you manage to do something with the photos of me you took on our hikes? :)

Hi dear Paul ,
It is very nice with great details.
I like this blue sky.
Well done
Kind regards
Saeed

Hi Paul

Congrats on meeting 300 and well done on the picture of the red kite. It is stunning. Details are excellent, sound like you had a good time there.

Incidentally, I saw 23 red kites whilst driving down the M40 on my way home yesterday... they were enjoying the breezy conditions whilst I fought to keep the car in a straight line!

Hello Paul
I missed this landmark of yours but many belated congratulations and thanks for all your superb pictures.
This one is a stunner...An inflight shot is one of the hardest but you have nailed this Fabulous Red Kite perfectly.
I saw one yesterday in the deepest depths of essex well away from the release programme yesterday...It was really exciting to see one and I spoke to a local farmer and he has seen it now for a couple of months flying with the buzzards.
All the Best
