Syrphus ribesii

Body length 12mm approx

This hoverfly was resting in strong sunlight on a dead piece of bracken which was sun bleached grey/white. This is very over exposed because it caught the sun but I liked this shot anyway as it’s just about the closest I’ve got to one without it flying away!

Syrphus ribesii is a very common hover-fly, widespread in Britain and Ireland. Found in gardens, hedgerows and woodland rides and visits flowers to feed on nectar. Multiple-brooded, adults are seen April-October. Larva found on leaves and feed on aphids.

Photo cropped a little.

Hello Andy!
Wonderful macro.Details, sharpness,DOF and composition are perfect.TFS...:-)

Great macro! Excellent sharpness, beautiful colors, very nice background, very good DOF and cadrage. The only bad thing is overexposed ground in the right bottom corner of the photo. However, it's just an insignificant detail. Masterly captured. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Andy, you are right that it is O/E but it is still a great shot for detail and sharpness. Great macro, I haven't got this close myself. Good composition and DOF add to the interest. TFS :)

Excelent shot, Andy.
Well done on this composition and details. excelent work.

Mike

Hi Andy, it is a good capture and some nice details here. As you say the bracken is a little OE but you've made the best of it by cropping it out. Good composition too, very well done.

Hello Andy!
Very nice close up.Colors, details and DOF are excellent.
Thanks for sharing.

Wow, very nice macro. The DOF is huge for this kind of shot. The whole insect is very sharp. And look at the eyes! Well done Andy!

Very close iand a nice DOF. The light is nice. A bit bright on the branch? but not distracting though. Very well done, Andy.

Hi Andy, nice capture. A bit OE at the bottom but very fine details and nice background. Very good Dof.
Well done.

Fantastic macro Andy,
Perfect detail and wonderful colours. Very sharp and great DOF.
The OE doesn't bother me, this is well captured.
Thanks for posting

Great perspective Andy.
Shame about the overexposure on what it is resting on, otherwise a well detailed and nicely composed shot.

Nice one Andy. It's not easy taking pictures of these flies, but you've done a wonderful job on this one. The light coming off it is just right. Really sharp image against a perfect background. Well done. Regards, Vicky

Very good macro Andy

Hi Andy - good macro of a hoverfly, beautifull colors, good DOF and we can see many details. Well done !

Beautiful capture. The detail is very good, with great clearness, more taking into account the equipment used. With such a beautiful subject I will forget the overexposed perch this time ;)
Best wishes, Felipe.
