I went down to my local lake yesterday to see what I could find and was very suprised at the amount of life there! The evening before, I'd gone there and found nothing at all! But yesterday I saw lots of Emperor Dragonflies, Black-tailed Skimmers, a Broad-bodied Chaser, a few Four-Spotted Chasers, all the damselflies you could want including the Banded Demoiselle, a pair of Hobby Falcons catching all the insects, a few butterflies, Herons, Long-tailed Tits... the list goes on! :-)

After a while I realised that it was going to be easier to capture a flying dragonfly by manually focusing the shot. So when this one flew by I tracked it and snapped a few shots but failed miserably with just a blur of bluish green :-( But then she (it's a female I think) decided to hover and enabled me to get some better photos including this one :-)

I also got a polariser filter yesterday and had a go at shooting some landscapes. In the WS is a photo of the field next to the lake which is chockablock full of insects.

I hope you like it!

Hi Joe,
Wonderful shot. Placement in frame and OOF background is very nice.

I tried a few times to capture a flying dragonfly, no good results so far. TFS
Ali

Hello Joe
This is spot on....its no easy task catching these on the wing but you have pulled this one off perfectly..Manual focus is the only way to catch these and it also helps with a monopod for just a bit more stability.
Lovely workshop as well..I ordered a polariser last night as well!!
All the best
Paul
The hat is definitley yours for nailing this one!!
(ps thanks for your words in the forum..I am going tmw to try a sigma and a canon..but I do agree the canon looks cool which is a factor!!)

Hello Joe,
Wow, you're lucky to have found this gorgeous dragonfly - we hope to see it in a few weeks time here but it is not common. Excellent in-flight capture showing details very sharply and its colours are wonderful. Fine green background too. Well done!!
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hi Joe

Excellent in-flight shot. Brilliant sharpness, and I know how hard it is to get this type of shot. Great composition and background.

Well done young man, you're very tallented. Dream big, then chase it.

Best wishes
Chris

Hello Joe,
It isn't easy to get a sharp in-flight of these guys. Though there is some kind of smoothing out in the PP work this is a fine shot of a Blue Emperor and deserves credit, the POV, BG and timing being excellent.
You did very well with your lens as it is a bit easier with a telephoto.
TFS this beauty,
Ivan

Hai Joey,
priceless catch! everybody dream to capture like this image. you got it and what a beautiful image.

Hi Joe,

We have seen lots and lots of dragonflies on TN but rarely one in-flight. How nice she was cooperative and you got a fantastic shot of her hovering. You have frozen her in space perfectly. Beautiful colors, sharp details and a superb background. Bravo!

Jane

You will have to share..or at best I will have to re-learn the patience it takes to get this kind of image...Amazing Joey! Simply wonderful.

well done!

Joe, the countryside in your workshop picture looks beautiful. I was in your country around this time of the year in 1995 and recollect fondly my memories of roving around in the area between Uppingham and Peterborough. At that time, I was interested only in landscapes and did not go looking for insects :)!
I too have shot dragonflies in mid-flight with a reasonable degree of success.
You have done a good job here with 1/2000. All the feature and colours of this Emperor are well captured.
TFS and all the best.

Hi Joe

Sounds great that lake of yours :) I would like to see a nice landscape shot from it one day, too :)

This is an excellent shot of this flying emperor!
You are right about the focus...it's really difficult to do when they are flying and not hovering. However, with a little patience you might find one resting and chewing on a meal and that's when you can get some very nice shots. Or, you can be on the lookout for ovipositing females in this period...that would be a nice shot there as well.

As for this one here, i like your parallel POV and the beautiful colors you managed to retain. It might not be your sharpest one, but it's still a good one never the less.

Bravo and TFS

Tu cámara no descansa Joe ( la mia poco también jeje). Oportuno momento el captado... y en este tipo de tomas no suele haber una segunda oportunidad !!
