Well at last we had some sunshine today and after a trip up into the forest, i stopped off at the Wetlands Nature Reserve on the edge of the forest. Hoping to see some Butterflies but very few about, behind the centre which they use for teaching school children about nature they have a pond of which there were many Blue Damselflies, i was pleased to see a pair of Emperor Dragonflies darting above the pond. The female was laying eggs of which i do have a few pictures but nothing to special.

Emperor Dragonfly ( Anax imperator ) Length 78mm.
This is a large Dragonfly which is recognised by a dark dorsal line running the length of the Abdomen.
The colour of the Abdomen is sky blue on the Male and greenish blue in the Female.
It is extremely active and wary.
It is associated with lakes, ponds and canals and characteristically hunts over open water.
Found mainly in Southern England.
Flies from June-August.

Hello Nick,
Colours, sharpness and details are excellent, as always. Great POV and composition. Maybe not special to you, but very beautiful to me.
Regards,
Peter

Un buen encuadre y enfoque en todo el cuerpo. A destacar la belleza bien captada de los colores, sobre todo en la cabeza y en el torax.
Bonito trabajo.

Hello Nick,
Very nice capture of a female Blue Emperor, a rare visitor to Sweden. You took her from a fine POV with excellent sharpness and DOF and she shows up well against the BG. I have only seen this species in flight and laying eggs.
TFS this beauty,
Have a good week,
Ivan

Hello Nick,
You were lucky to get such a fine capture of this female in a hanging position showing all details sharply. I captured one laying eggs last year but she was half-hidden by reeds! Beautiful colours and well composed.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hello Nick, we are neighbours today. This is a wonderful view, superb macro, of this dragonfly. I like the diagonal branch and the underneath view of the insect. The colours are breathtaking too. Superb work as usual!

Francine

Hi Nick

Good shot of one of my favourite insects. I was fortunate to see them at the Arne RSPB reserve last year. You've done well to get a decent shot - as you say in your notes they are very active and wary.

Hi Nick

Great colours and wonderful POV - lovely detail too. We were going to go out today, but it has been so windy we didn't - a lot of the leaves have been blown of the trees!

James

Hi Nicholas,
Very good image especially in terms of POV and DOF.
Good lighting..

Hello Nick,

You were lucky if you had sun!
We had very strong winds an rain - impossible for photography!

This is a wonderful shot.
The composition impressed me on the thumbnail but full size, I can appreciate the sharp details and the wonderful textures.

kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi
Nice capture of this Emperor Dragonfly, very good colours and very good light.
The BG is little bit 'busy', especially the green leaf that is behind the green body of the kingfisher.

Hi Nick, great looking capture, the colours on this image do a complete justice and compliment the creature in the flesh.. Very fine work this, details are spot on, regards h

Hola amigo,
perfecta macro,
un excelente specimen de anax,
buenos detalles y color.
saludos

the word Emperor comes to mind much...for a couple of reasons...#1 my daughter in law is Japanese...#2....Emperor is pretty much what some Americans think of when hearing the word...a Emperor and Japan...and thirdly #3....the image has an oriental quality to it...Think of all the things you put together and maybe not even knowing...or perhaps in the sub conscious!

Hi Nick, splendid dragonfly with excellent sharpness and fine details, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Nicholas,
Interesting species presented in interesting pose. I know this species very well, but it is always seen by me when it is flying, not "relaxing" like this specimen :)
Very good details and sharpness.
Best regards,

Very good shot of this female Emperor dragonfly, Nick!
You were lucky to get so close to a stationary one... the ones around here dart off if you get within 5m of them!
Very detailed and sharp.
Excellent composition too.
Perfect light.

Well done!

Joe

Hello Nick
this dragonfly has quite spectacular colors. Thank you for this capture for great clearness in a friendly way
Laurent

Hi Nicholas,
a very clear and precise portrait of Anax imperator, taken from a well chosen slightly inclined point of view. The colour contrast between those bright cerulean blue and emerald green spots of the dragonfly's body and the warm reddish hues of the background is delightful.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter
