Well i had just packed up and about to leave the Forest car park yesterday when a young child started to scream , she had seen the beautiful Dragonfly fly by and land just a few feet from my car. Out came the camera again with no time to change to my macro lens so this was taken with a canon 75 - 300 IS USM lens hand held. Not the best pose but i was pleased to get the picture. I think the child was all for stamping on it . after taking a few shots it flew away in to the trees ,so it was out of harms way.

Golden Ringed Dragonfly ( Cordulegaster boltonii ) Length 78 - 80 MM.
A striking dragonfly easily recognised by its dark body marked with bright yellow rings on the abdomen. Favours clean fast flowing rivers and streams. Its squat nymphs lives buried in silt and sediment at the bottom. fast flying and active in sunny weather but on dull days often lethargic and can be wathched at close range. widespread in the west of England and Wales and Scotland and often seen in the uplands, Flies June - August.

Yesterday was warm sunny day but with a fair wind . It was seen near a large lake but no river.I think it was taking a rest from the wind on the ground so i could get close up.

Hi Nick

I like that the story had a happy end :)
Great job with this lens, too and it's great to see one of the Cordulegaster species here on TN...they are quite rarely photographed. I know i've been searching for them a lot here lately but with no luck at all :(

Even if this wasn't the best pose for a dragonfly shot, you really did a great job with the DOF and exposure here. Very neat and sharp and well saturated, too.
This is also likely to be a very young adult...it might be only my impression but i think the tips of its wings aren't even completely stretched. That might also explain why it would land so close to people and not somewhere else, safer.
Anyway, nice work, my friend!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Nick

Oooh! My favourite UK dragonfly of all and you've captured it in exquisite detail, especially for a 'snap shot'. And yes, it is annoying just how scared of dragonflies some people are - really need educating as to how beautiful and beneficial they are. Nice one!

Helo Nicholas,
a well captured Cordulegaster resting on this nice substrate/background.
Approaching was probably not so easy without disturbing this impressive species!
Best wishes, Peter

Nice idea of this beautiful dragonfly to take a rest near your car! A good shot with clear details. Best regards,
Catherine

Hello Nick,
The Golden-ringed Dragonfly is not that common in Sweden and to make agood capture like this is a real prize. Great that you could take this on the contrasting sandy gravel of a carpark and the POV, DOF and sharpness are really good.
TFS this fine image,
Ivan

Hello Nicholas

Hi Nicholas!

Sometimes we have to take the opportunity and react as you did: point and shoot! It was a good idea, and the picture turned out quite good! The background is different from what we usually see, and that's quite interesting. I also like the narrative notes.

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Nick,
You were really quick off the mark here and got a splendid shot of this beautiful dragonfly! Sometimes one gets the best shots when in a hurry! All nicely in focus, great sharpness and natural colours. It looks very fresh too me. I'm glad the kid didn't get it before you!!

Hi Nick,

The shadow gives this dragonfly a very special look. It makes him appear to be lifted off the ground. Excellent colors and sharp details of the face, body and wings.

Probably one of my favourite dragonflies and you have captured it very well!
I once found a mating pair of these several years ago while in Cornwall, but damn! I had no camera :-(
You've made the most of the awkward pose and this has a great composition.
Brilliant sharpness and clarity.
Nice, vibrent colours.

Well done,
Joe
