I saw this monster of a dragonfly on Monday when i had the day off . I had been trying to get an inflight shot but it landed deep in the grass , it was then i noticed it had caught a insect and was busy eating its catch. I would have liked a better back ground but this was not to be.

Hi Nick,

I can see where this one got his name from! I love the vertical position - he looks almost as long as the grass. Spectacular color and details of the head, body and wings. An excellent close-up.

Hello Nick,
Very good capture of the monster. Excellent sharpness. Maybe the background darker can be better. I think it's possible to do it, but I'm not very good in PP. Anyway, a good nature shot. Best regards,
Catherine

Hello Nick,
I remember well the first time I came across this dragonfly when I was very impressed by its size. I think this capture is really more interesting than an in-flight capture. The details are very sharp and it does look a bit like a monster. I like the light and the way it stands out against the light background.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Nick, your dragonflies are impeccable... sharp, coloured and excellent composition. Superb use of light, a most impressive upload..tfs, regards h

Hello Nicholas,
I search on Cordulegaster insignis with a odonatologist from the Netherlands for three days. It is very similar with black and yellow colors to your species. This is not only very beautiful species, but also has a great macro photograph taken by you. Thanks for sharing,
best wishes
Ahmet

Hi Nicholas...Excellent shot...Composition very good...Detail and patten perfect...My country people call Dragonfly a Helicopter...thanks to share regards, Leyla

I saw something on Martha...today on the TV show. I hear the UK will not allow her over...I for one did not like her but she has intestinal fortitude...so because she was tenacious...I have watched. And today she had on a certain lizard which oddly enough had the same colouring. Now she was asked if it looked unusual and she said yes because of its yellow and black but thick abdomen...which must have been the winning answer..and to me it looks like a wasp:-) I know what it si but I would hate to think it might land on me and me think it other.
Bob

Hi Sir!
I don't know why you wanted a better BG, this looks amazing in itself! And catchlight in an insect's eye!!!!!!!!!
WOW!Way to go!Nick!

Hi Nicholas!

Real monster [for other insects :-)] but also very beautifull. I like colour scheme with yellow/black rings. Good vertical composition, pity about BG but it isn't so bad. Great catch and I bet you had got great day.

Nick, BG does not matter here.
It is an action shot and you have captured it very well.
The dragonfly really looks gigantic. The focus on the eye in particular is just perfect.
Despite busy BG, the subject stands out clearly because of its colour.
TFS and regards.

Hi Nick,
a lovely specimen you caught here, a real beastie. BG is a little busy i guess, but does not detract from the quality of the main subject - very well done.

Hello Nicholas,

Effectively dragonflies are very formidable predators!!! I agree with you about the busy background but we don't have always control when photographying nature...!

Having photographied a dragonfly with its prey is a grat achievement!!!

Congratulations and TFS!

Hello Nick,

The b/g is not a distraction from your shot as it is quite blurred and the colours are great!
What a shot! It does appear to be a big dragonfly; it is very nicely detailed and sharp. Could you tell what it was eating? It is a mouthful!!

My husband captured a very good shot of a dragonfly this week; the first we have ever seen around our neighbourhood.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Nick!

It is dramatic and beautiful at the same time. This dragonfly is impressive because of its aggressive colour as well as because of its dimension. The background - from my point of view - is fine, it's natural and as nice as the totally, sometimes unnaturally blurred ones.

Kind regards

Markus

Even though you were not able to get this big dragonfly out in the open, you still got a good shot. Very sharp, nice details, excellent colors. I have never seen a dragonfly that large.

Very nice Nicholas,
Razor sharp where it must be..I like the comp and POV in this one as well :)

Very nice POV, details, saturation, contrast, lighting and colors. TFS
Greetings,

This is a beautiful closeup. The black and yellow stripes remind me of a wasp or yellow jacket. The POV really gives an indication of how long this fellow is. Also, your notes are very informative. :)
